I regularly play Elite in VR using a HOTAS and headphones which has been blast, but today I just added 2 Dayton audio transducers to the underside of my office chair and discovered I've been missing the 4th dimension of Elite.
NOTE: For those who don't know, a transducer is a speaker that shakes whatever it is attached to (chairs/couches) allowing the audience to 'feel' the lower sounds.
Its incredible feeling the roar of my Krait's thrusters, the spin up of the warp drive, and the power of a rail gun's shot. After getting the feel for it, I landed so i could tryout the SRV. Landing in itself was impressive, feeling a thunderous tremor as I touched down in my 320 ton ship just felt satisfying. Seconds later I was zipping around in my space rover feeling every rock and pebble I ran over, with moments of stillness from the 'airtime' as I ramped over hills. After the tests I switched to my Viper MIII and realized just how insanely awesome the sound design is in Elite Dangerous. Boosting in a viper has a completely different 'feel' than the boost from the krait, the viper has a roar but it felt controlled, efficient, powerful. By comparison the Krait felt powerful for sure but also wild and probably missing a couple fail safes resulting in a much rougher ride. All of this is there in the sound design but having a transducer really pulls out some subtleties and adds another layer of immersion. Shout out if your setup has one!
