Yeah like I would set the price as expensive say 3 billion credits, it would give a community something to work towards a base of operations for a Squadron. The ability to buy modules and customise it how you like. Buy turrets and set defences. It would add another layer of immersion.
I'd put ₢3 billion credits as more the cost of a decent bit of space on a station, maybe at a 1.0g rotation point with a nice view. At ₢3bn a significant number of commanders could buy their own stations, and still have plenty of change.
Instead of credits I would like to ally this system with Squadrons in an almost utopic future where players can freely construct stations/starports/planetside bases and such. Squadrons would be considered as small factions once enough influence has been gathered (without having to contact and wait for DEVs response) and would control regions of space. So, for mining in planets or even asteroids, much like that one megaship, Squadrons would use their funds and the goods would not relate directly to only credits, if they wanted they could just turn it into profit or use it to upgrade/build bases to expand their territory, this way Squadrons would have to balance the amount they spend to mine and how much they use their products. Who knows? Maybe even build fleet carriers and capital ships that require more than just shoot heat vents to destroy (these would be man piloted too). This future would be bliss for me, personaly.
This would seem more reasonable - a squadron acting in concert of a significant size could buy one.
I'd also make certain stations inviolate, such as those in Sol, Shinrarta, Alioth, Archenor etc. As in they could not ever be PC controlled.
Making them squadron decision based is interesting too, spending cash on defences, even lighting (my home system has several dodgy lights around the entrance I'd love to be able to mend). It could make for an interesting sub-game, but...
I think the issue would be that it would become a space-station management game rather than a space-ship flying game. I think that could be quite cool, and an interesting addition, but it's a long way from the core of the game.
