The ability to salvage components from crashed ships

When I drop into an unidentified signal source and find a wrecked ship floating in space, I want it. Or at least the good bits. Wouldn't it be nice if you could equip your ship with a salvage scanner and a grabber arm. It would be so much fun to salvage good components from the floating wreckage. You may make a little money or even find something to upgrade your own ship. What do you guys think?

Salvaging might be nice but it would be preferable if it wasn't anything more than scrap of various values for commercial sale, maybe it could be very rare that you get some valuable scrap. I'd hate to see complete weapons and such salvagable. Maybe if it destroyed the wreck when you salvaged it, that would help to reduce clutter on the server too.

Another use for the utility mount perhaps?

Salvaging should be a viable option, but nothing in a prestine status, depending how damaged the part of the ship is from which it is salvaged it the component should never be above 40% status, and it can be repared at a station and even identified for which class (A to G)

This is something that you can do in X3. I know I've been comparing ED to X3 quite a bit, but I spent a couple of years in that game. X3 also has a vibrant modding community
(that has let me add Firefly music to the game). :D

I'm sure that FD is looking at what has been done before in this genre and is planning to out do its predecessors. ! look forward to what Elite will become in the next year or two.

I always liked to start the game by hunting a few pirates until one of them gives up his ship, then sell it or use it if it's better than the buster. That was awesome, but with the unshielded pirate ships in ED it would be far too easy. Salvaging parts or at least their ammo like in X3 would be cool, some expensive missiles really were a good income.
