One of the difficulties I have had lately occurs when I reconfigure my ship from one purpose to another, for example from multipurpose trading to mining. I tend to play my power use tight which means when switching to something else there's a good chance I've somehow slipped over my intended output. Then later when I change back certain items might not be properly set in terms of priority, which ends up meaning half my systems go down the moment I deploy hardpoints.
Then, after one battle in which I had had to deal with this forgetful problem, I was in the middle of overheating. I forgot that NPCS no longer had Engineer mods and had assumed my overheating was some kind of attack that had happened, but when I didn't start cooling down (going 300 and then 400%!) I thought maybe some griefer had snuck into my instance and was hitting me with heat rays while using silent running for lulz.
I had no heat sinks left. I checked my control panel, shutting stuff off, hoping to cool down, nothing. I figured I'd jump to hyperspace in case it was a stealth heater somewhere.
Only after I go to hyperspace do I start to cool down and I realize the problem - I had accidentally been using silent running. DOH!
So why is this called the advantage of a large ship? Well, I was running a Clipper, and I had been confused and befuddled by what was going on for a LONG time. By the time it was sorted out I was down to 30% hull and most of my modules were in various states of failure and all low on integrity.
If I hadn't been in an A-rated clipper I doubt I would have survived as long as I had. It bought me the time I needed to survive my own stupidity.
Granted this was my own fault and I should have run through Silent Running as a possibilty much earlier, but I haven't had a problem with SR for months, so I forgot. It does make me think there needs to be a special warning when overheating due to silent running, though. That little SILENT RUNNING icon in the corner doesn't quite cut it. Like a "Warning - Silent Running" every few seconds when you're over 200%
