CMDRs log Episode 13: The perils of greed...
So, whilst I have a lucrative new mission for Prof Palin, I still have a damaged escape pod and 'encrypted correspondence' in my hold from investigating the ships the Thargoids destroyed.
And no one seems interested in them around Maia.
So I decide to return to the Thargoid 'scout ship' via Sisters' Refuge, in the hope I can pass these over to the proper authorities before continuing my mission.
CMDR Zulhoun, looking pensive whilst refuelling on the way:
The authorities at Sisters Refuge took in the escape pod and encrypted data, for a nominal reward.
Its not the reward, more the trying to help:
Departing the Refuge, again:
The view forward:
Refuelling on the way back to HIP 17125:
I am gratified to learn that the effort expended in targeting and scanning the 'scout' on my first visit has paid off, and there is now a marker in Euryale's nav system for me to follow back to the site.
The nav beacon at work:
This time I took some time to survey the scene before scooping the loot and boosting for orbit.
The crashed Thargoid 'scout ship':
Close-up, underside:
Are those...? I assume they're sensor clusters. But. Eyes:
SRV for scale:
Its un-mistakably Thargoid. But something isn't right. It just looks so... different to the Thargoid 'ships' I've seen recently.
Its colour. Its surface texture. Its shape. All similar. All different. Also. A detail I failed to note on my previous visit - the scan results say 'traces of Mycoid particles present".
Oh. No. I hope the enviro scrubbers on the Euryale are able to clean that up. i'll have to try and get a full de-contamination sweep done next time she's in dock. preferably without ending up in quarantine followed by prison. Or worse, some Aegis vivisection lab.
Well, I aten't dead, yet. That has to be a good sign, right?
It certainly looks like a match for the archival scans of Thargoids, if you can find one. If they are not some black ops propaganda/disinformation, that is, as some have taken to claiming of late.
An 'old-school' Thargoid?
Have the Thargoids undergone a rapid period of technological change? Advancement? If the Thargoids are the ships, rapid evolution?
None of that seems likely, at face value. To me, at least. Yeah, yeah, who gave me a Nobel prize for knowing it all?
Are the two apparent types of Thargoids different? I am suddenly reminded of my atempts to resolve the mysteries of the 'Guardian' ruins that ultimately left me stranded in stasis for almost a year. Their society split into two branches. Those who embraced grafting technology and AI to their bodies and those who did not.
At the time I was harbouring thoughts that the Guardians might *be* the Thargoids.
Could this be the case? In which case which Thargoid is which?
I can feel the dark tendrils of obsession clutching at my mind again. Snap out of it. Job to do here.
Also, I've noticed that the Thargoid resin/bio/tech samples carry a 'sell price' of several hundred thousand credits, Even if I'm only getting 20% of that, I could make decent pocket change filling the rest of Euryale's 16t hold over and above the 3 units I need for the mission...
Wait. Is this thing interfering with my systems? Still active?
Time to get out of here! Scoop the three units of Thargoid resin. And since I've always been able to make it back to Maia before any sub-system has taken more than about 10% damage, I scoop up whatever else I can find, Thargoid samples wise, until I have 12 units in the hold, all told.
Blast off:
If you see the, uh, deliberate mistake there, just hold that thought a moment. Becasue I didn't. So Imagine my confusion when...
'Engage Supercruise'.
*BLARP* 'Unable to comply!'
*BLARP* 'Unable to comply!'
*BLARP* 'Unable to comply!'
*BLARP* 'Unable to comply!'
What? How? Why? Thargoids?
All the while sub-system damage alerts are slowly ticking by.
Hard points are stowed. Check. Cargo hatch closed. Check. Landing gear retracted. Check.
'Engage Supercruise'.
*BLARP* 'Unable to comply!'
NO!
Open right panel. Cycle to sub-systems. Oh. 'SRV Bay 0%'.
*Sharp intake of breathe* - Well, there's your problem:
A hasty landing is made. Fortunately I have an automated repair unit installed for just this eventuality (I don't have access to Prof Palins Engineer services yet, it seemed a good idea). If only I was half as clever as I thought I was.
SRV bay repaired, cargo hatch repaired, thrusters repaired.
Blast off, again. Looks good, even at this angle:
You probably noticed the second 'deliberate mistake' back there. You guessed it. It wasn't until I got back to Obsidian Orbital that I realised my hold was empty.
Cargo hatch repaired.
Razzin' frazzin' sassin' frassin...
So yeah, I repair poor abused Euryale at the yard, get her decontaminated, just in case, with a story about radiation warning lights on the panel, yadda, yadda, etc. It seemed to work.
Then I fly back, scoop just the three units I need, return and collect the 15 McR. Lesson learned. Greed will be your downfall if you let it get the better of you.
Yeah, listen to me, pillar of moral fortitude.
Shhhhyeahhhhhh, riiiiiiight.
All of these thoughts about Thargoids, abou Aegis, my misgivings about who they are, what they might be. Be 'they' Thargoids or Aegis.
Maybe I need to get away from this for a while. But what is a CMDR in a moral quandry to do?
Well, having learned that greed is bad, m'kay, I decide I should go help out with the Core Dynamics situation. It'll be a few easy millions in the bank, and might get me a discount on Federal combat ships.
Yeah. Pillar of moral fortitude my...
Returning to Cyllene Orbital, Atlas system, before heading back into the bubble:
