The Aesthetics of Space-Legs

Good comparison. I had similar thoughts where I'd often think the Alien world was a close enough alternate universe/history of the ED universe except where ED civilization is fortunate enough not to have encountered nasty xenomorph aliens or genocidal engineers. It seems to be a great testament to the enduring production design of Alien that has influenced so much in cultural sci-fi aesthetics in the decades since. The colony buildings in Aliens (before they were busted up by the xenomorph-colonist battle) could also pass as ED habitats.

There's been a nice flood of creativity with Planet Coaster, so it's reassuring to see the cobra engine is more than capable of future spacelegs expansion..

Alien Isolation was a fantastic game.

As much as Elite was probably never meant to be a first-person shooter, Frontier gets things like sound and graphics design right. It would be an insane amount of work, but I really do believe that the potential is there for a gritty, tense space legs experience to be had in the game.

We've got dark, floating spaceship hulks that are themselves a respectable FPS-sized level. We've also got isolated and abandoned surface outposts galore- all potential goldmines of tense first-person experience. The skeleton is there- whether Frontier cares to add flesh and skin is anyone's guess!

As much as I absolutely love the movie Alien (additionally Jerry Goldsmith) and can respect Alien Isolation (even though I got bored with it), I think I'd like to see a variety of atmospheres as horror can get a little boring and predictable after a while.

The common-room in that video with the round table and monitors above looks lifted from the Alexei Leonov from 2010. ;)

I dunno about that - the thargoids seemed nasty and genocidal enough in the previous elite games.

It can be part of future QOL improvements on stations and settlements, People hanging around in passengers terminals, ground crew working on landing pads, etc.., ;)

I just hope that space legs hasn't been designed as badly as the awful bouncy clown car that is the SUV. Which is only made worse by the stupid wave scanner. The only function in the SUV I like is self destruct - and even this is tedious.

i wan't to go and see the 10m glass walls of the Emperor's Palace glisten in the sunset :p Also i wonder what colour would sunsets be on Achenar?

Agree the SRV handling just sucks with constant spinning around when hitting the slightest of pebbles, some Engineering mods to increase traction would be welcome. I quite like the Wavescanner though, it gives a reasonable illusion of being an actual working device far better than the lame POI blue circles you get from altitude.

Yeah, and it's especially frustrating that during the Horizons launch FD stated that they took a lot of time to 'get driving around' right.
As much good as the flight model is, the driving model (for me at least) really misses the mark.
I never feel that I'm in control of my SRV and the slightest wrong movement makes me lose control of the buggy.

I'd love a skimmer to replace my SRV.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. They aren't going to create the equivalent of a whole new FPS game when this would just be an optional update not even every player will buy.

I'd expect to see us just able to move around existing areas and assets with maybe a limited area of each ship available too.

If we get Space legs, what game captures the feel/look of how you'd imagine the Elite-verse on the ground?

For me, it's Alien Isolation...

Honestly I'd just be happy with a disembodied camera view that you could move along the ground to pretend that you're walking on the surface of a planet or exiting your SRV to do the same. They can add bells, whistles and station/ship interiors later. You can almost do it with the current hideously convoluted camera controls except that you tend to randomly phase into the ground like a certain teenage x-man as you move which kinda breaks the mood.

For a start, how many 0.05 g planets have you guys driven on? Drive on a 1 or 2 g planet and the handling works much as one would expect. Having said that, a skimmer or pilot controlled drone would be awesome. Also, disable Drive Assist, works better for me.
