The agony and the ecstasy of Elite Dangerous

I've not played a game that rewards and punishes you for your decisions and mistakes in a way that just keeps you coming back for more.
Buying the wrong weaponry, taking a trip to a Nav Beacon and then realising you've made the wrong choice, limp back like a fool only to increase your resolve and do more research before heading out again. It's great. Every trip, despite how routine it appears underneath, becomes an adventure that sparks a little more imagination as to what you could be capable of as both you and the game develops. Maybe it's just me.

It's not without fault, or maybe it was designed this way. Be careless and spray bullets all over the place for example and, rightly so, the Feds start turning their attentions to you. I'm sure if you fired a gun IRL on the street the effects would be the same. It does force a certain discipline when engaging in combat and while people bemoan about this, bounty hunting isn't the be all in the game. I ran out of air trying to get back to a station in time after facing this scenario, was interdicted twice on the way which wasted valuable time and was out of time. Normally I'd launch a controller at the screen with other games in frustration but ED doesn't want to make me do this. At all.

Similarly, taking a trip to deep space for exploration only to miscalculate fuel/ distance and face the decision to self destruct and lose the astro-data you've spent ages collecting or float forever. Bang, another harsh lesson that makes you re-evaluate a decision made. You don't get to reset IRL so again, it does make you think a little deeper despite being just a 'game'.

Can't really explain it. It's vast, it's sometimes lonely, it's sometimes harsh, but it's probably one of the most engaging games I've played in a very long time, for very different reasons for each and every one of us.

Anyone else get the agony and ecstasy ? And not about missing or dropped features, but some of the things ED just makes you do differently ?
