The Alien: Isolation Thread

WOW

I'd love to just walk around a 3D render of the Nostromo. I gather this is a different ship of course but same "universe" per se hence recognisable design.

Been looking into this today. Here is a video discussing the game-play of the demo journalists have played.

It's set on a station or ship built in the same style as the Nostromo.

I'll be looking out for the game when it comes out, it could be fantastic, though it could also be terrible. They at least have the style right and making it 'horror-survival' is perfect. It's probably going to be pretty linear though, which isn't necessarily bad but I'd much rather be able to explore and find my own solutions to problems in a more 'sandboxy' way.

I think being forced to find the one specific solution that the designers want you to is something I'd like to see less of in games.

Finally, an Aliens game that looks quite promising.

Yeah, I just started paying attention to this one and I'm impressed so far. I haven't been into an Alien game in....well, a very long time! They've all been disappointments of one variety or another from what I've seen, and I have no desire to play AlienS ripoff #294. Alien Isoloation, with its focus on the first film's aesthetic and survival horror gameplay looks great.

It certainly looks impressive and I love a good Alien themed game. I hope it ends up being more than a playable movie, with some actual gameplay to it.

Totally.

Sadly though I'm sure it will be online only/activation/steam so unless there is a CD key in the physical pack.....it's not for me. ..... unless it comes on GOG one day :)

A somewhat informative article on the design of the game. It's interesting how much effort was apparently undertaken to get the 70s design down here, from using VHS/Betamax video playback to forcing level set design adhere to 70s era technology. Pretty neat. The discussion of the Alien AI was heartening. If it works it should be a really good experience.

The utterly depressing thing is that in the first picture on that site - there are maybe only three (and unconfirmed) females present :(

So much for inclusiveness and equality in gaming design :(

Looks like the setting is good, and the potential is great, but one thing I hate, and several games do this, is making usable objects glow.

Oh indeed!

Has anyone seen the latest "trailer" for the new Thief?

It's even worse than the last one. Why do console games insist on holding hands and showing the way for everything? Completely ruined a good series - and shame on me for pre-ordering :(

Yes, I was thinking the same. They should really find another way to draw the player's attention. On the one hand they are all into immersion and not having a UI so you feel like you're truly in this world, then at the same time they put in iridescent flashing wrenches. :S

Hmmmm available for Xbox 1 and PS4. I might have to buy one just to play this game.

And PC. :)

It's a problem throughout the IT/Computer science world, not just game design. That said, I do think that games are making great strides in presenting strong, non-stereotyped female leads in many stories now. I suppose you can cling to that as evidence of progress. :)

What, what? :) Been too long, Yaffs... I assume it was the same as many adventure games, though. Either you were pixel hunting for that thingiemagig you needed or it was glowing/flashing like a neon sign.

Pixel hunting. Use the rubber chicken on the wire...

After a good few hours with the new Thief - I can honestly say I'm kind of heartbroken :(

When will peeps learn to just update the graphics, sounds and the AI for the original game, and leave all this reboot crap and console kiddie nonsense in the cesspit where it belongs.

There is a good reason why classics remain classics, and butchering them almost beyond recognition doesn't help anything. The lack of anything new being created beyond rehashed games and movies is really kind of depressing.

FD - please, pretty please, make ED a lot better than the sorry messes we have had to suffer recently. I do believe you can make it happen!

Asp - Do you see that happening with Alien: Isolation? Serious - just curious what you see about it that troubles you? After Colonial Marines no one would blame you for being skeptical. :)

Jenner - I honestly cant say anything yet until I've got A:I installed and running. It really could go either way at this point.

I have my fears though. The "no HUD" thing was promised for A:CM and look how that turned out. The "using original material" was also promised for A:CM and look how that turned out.

I remain hopeful though! It could very well turn out to be the greatest thing since sliced Trumble.

As for Thief though - after finding a very helpful review that showed me how to turn all the "assists" off - I am getting to like it more. It's not Thief but it's far better than it was!

Have to say though - my GF loves it on the PS4 just as it is.
