Community Event / Creation The Alpha Waste Canister Time Challenge

It's a shame you Alphans can't take part in the leaderboard. Or did you have a thread for the "4 pips to engines, full throttle get all the canisters" challenge?

It would be good to have a challenge that both Alphans and Betans can participate.
We did.
A little bit of fun.

Background

You've hit some hard times recently and are struggling to pay for your scheduled ship maintenance. You've been called to help out and destroy toxic chemicals in a nearby star system that are about to explode and put lives in danger.

You take the mission as you are desperate for the money. However once you jump into the system your engines malfunction and are stuck at maximum power and speed. You don't have time to fix them as the toxic chemicals are due to explode. Your ship has been fitted with special high temperature implosive rounds that will destroy the toxic chemicals without environmental contamination.

Challenge

Load up waste disposal on Alpha 1.1.
As soon as the mission starts you need to divert all power to the engines and set throttle to maximum.
In as short as time as possible clear all toxic containers.
Timer starts as soon as the mission starts (i.e. you close the instruction screen)
Time stops as soon as the mission formally ends.. i.e. a few seconds after you destroy the last canister.
Flight Assist can be used/toggled as you wish
Boost may be used as you wish
Throttle and engine power must remain at maximum and in the forward direction at all times. As your engines have malfunctioned there can be no switching to reverse or adjusting engine throttle in any manner.
Toxic containers must be shot, not rammed.

enjoy!

Best time was Isinona's 32 seconds, my best was that 47 seconds you see in the video I linked earlier.

I didn't know that you'd already organised a time challenge. It's up in the Alpha only section of the forum. Oh but that Solar Fluke challenge is wonderful! Every time I lunged for him I ended up having to dodge the wall of rock I was now hurtling towards :)

But I got the little blighter! :D 1st hit got him down to 90% the next 85%. I thought I was going to be there a long time, and then I boosted into him right up his exhaust pipes and finished him off. Was I supposed to keep a track of my time as well?

Nice one Frank, I'll have another pop at it.

Time yourself on your next go!

Finally managed to hit the Solar Fluke... 3:21 without guns

Must try harder... :p

Edit: several tries later... 1:54.

Edit: Couple more: 1:08. Calling it quits there!

Frank - can you update the leader board (and put mine and Rog's names in lights?)

Okay I've updated the leaderboard, and entered my time for totalling the Solar Fluke. 10 minutes and 19 seconds might seem like a long time but I did manage to damage a couple of asteroids at the same time.

Try a dumping a heat-sink straight away so that he doesn't see you coming, and boosting into him.

Are there any passing moderators? I think I may have started this thread in the wrong place. The private Backer's Forum might be a better.

If you're out there and you agree, could you shift it for me?

Managed to get the Solar Fluke rammed and ka-boomed in 31 secs. :)

Dumping heatsinks as you approach, power to systems and boosting into him seems the trick. After a few goes, you manage to avoid impacting asteroids.

Mostly.

Have downloaded Open Broadcasting Software, and if the puny laptop will run it (and if I can work it out) will try to record a vid.

Wow! Rog the Suicide Squid!

I've got a great Idea. I fly in front of the pilot to slow him down and you smash into his rear end and we'll make a killing with the insurance.

It's a deal... I can probably get a nasty whiplash on my eyestalks - we'll make a fortune! :D

BTW, tried the same thing with the 'Misfortune' scenario - he's made of tougher stuff, and even with full power to shields, a high-speed ram proved fatal - to me, not him.

It's not helping that I've lost my specs and can't find the damn things...

Hee hee hee

Some please give that alien some Rep for me.

If that doesn't melt the hearts of the jury nothing will.
