The 'Always Online' dream. Keep dreaming.

I love this game. I really do, but I call FD's promises that ED would work well online even for 'spotty connections' into question.

I've got a good solid Sky Broadband connection, but the constant server disconnects are crippling this game for me right now. It doesn't make any difference if I'm playing open or solo. I've lost count of how many times I've worked a wanted Python's hull down to single figures only to be booted from the session. 50k bounty gone just like that, but the ammo I spent, fuel I used and damage I sustained? Oh, I still gotta pay for that. There's no point whatsoever in me taking on an Elite anaconda because the servers won't let me play long enough to finish the job. Bounty hunting is the most fun one can have in this game, but this shonky always-online nonsense is ruining it.

I'm on btinfinity and haven't lost a connection yet during play?!? Sometimes suffer with the long supercruise disconnect but that's all.

The only time I have had any connection issues since Launch was when the server went down for its 7am maintenance and once on Christmas Eve when my daughter 'borrowed' the router to wall socket cable to try out something on her Raspberry Pi.

I am not getting any disconnects. You obviously do not have a solid Sky Broadband.

Apart from the issues on new years day I haven't had any disconnects since launch, so I think it might be something to do with your internet connection. An issue I found when I was with Sky was their DNS servers were terrible, and that everything got a lot better when I switched to OpenDNS, so that could be something to try. Hope you get it sorted.

Not quite comparing the same things there though, are you? You are saying claims made about bandwidth usage are wrong because server availability isnt 100%. Unless you think that only the people with slow connections are getting kicked? but you cant think that because you state you have a good solid connection.

Try pressing ctrl+b during a session, and look at the bandwidth used - the figures are easily supportable over a slow connection.

Bandwidth usage and server reliability are two different things.

On Virgin and had several disconnects but as I also lost connection to Skype, Twitch and a bunch of other stuff it's not the ED servers. Currently looks like a problem with my power line setup.

I rarely have disconnection issues (I'm with Xilo). I was with Sky a few years back. Worse ISP I have ever used (BT and Virgin both close competitors though).

ISP is largely irrelevant. The nature of the game is such that this sort of constant server communication will inevitably result in hiccups and outright disconnections.

Right now, simply flying through unpopulated space on my way to visit a nebula, I've had two jump disconnections (transaction server error messages, dumped to main menu) resulting in me logging back in to find that the game is pretending the jump never happened.

The other day, I had to spam my D-scanner twice to actually discover anything.

This is just the nature of the beast.

Personally, I'm fine with this... if the game can actually implement enough multiplayer features (like proper communications options) to warrant the glitchy nature of all online things, and can do so promptly.

i havent had any server issues on there end but when it comes to the p2p parts like player interdiction i seen it fail nearly every time.

During the billionaire lottery server issues I got disconnected a few times. Only time I've had an issue.

I'm with Virgin (100mb) and have been playing since early November and never had a disconnect.

had a couple of crashes but I think that was due to something I have now uninstalled and all has been good since.

I'm not an expert here but when I used Sky for gaming I ended up with a bunch of connection problems. When I wanted to figure out what's wrong I read dozens of forums in which the conclusion was mostly down to Sky issues.
I'm sure Sky is stable but there might be a setting somewhere which handles data transfer differently and that creates issues which remains covered in normal browser use.
I couldn't find the solution so far but now I don't have to as I'm behind BT now.
Do a search and good luck!

Sky broadband is anything but "solid". Its on a copper-cable phone line usually using ADSL. Its prone to bad connections and interference. Plus Sky has a nasty habit of over-subbing its services in a given area causing even more connection problems. Added to this is that the NowTV boxes were a massive xmas sale item and are connecting to sky's network. These combined make sky atm a kinda crappy service.

Sorry but its true.

I beg to disagree. I was on Sky ADSL for a number of years with a rock solid 18mbs connection on a 20mbs line. Im now on sky fibre and have a similarly rock steady 38mb connection.
