The answer why there is sound in space

There was yet another post asking why we have sound while playing the game. Through time travel here is the answer.

What actually happened, far in the future as there is no sound in space and all ships were quiet, pilots were being destroyed without even knowing their ships were under attack. People wondered what happened to so many pilots gone, dead and wreckage found but why?

Then it happened a pilot under attack actually escaped and reported I was attacked and heard nothing, not a thing. Something needs done to fix this. The scientists said there is no sound in space and that is physics and nothing can be done.

Then it happened, a lone pilot Commander Jamerson found an old ancient computer game called Elite Dangerous and found a way to actually load it and played the game. He heard SOUND in the simulated space craft. He said but there is no sound in space, and then it hit him. There is no sound in computer code either, the ships make no sound, but someone thought why not add it for excitement. Hummm so if a computer can synthesize voices, and makes beeps and sounds why not utilize sound files on the ships computer and tie it into the sensors....... Brilliant and he tried it and none to soon. He was attacked that very day but his computer was relaying audio signals and he heard a ship near by. He heard the sound of their lasers and his shields being hit. He quickly deployed his own weapons and won the day.

News got back to the elite pilots guild and the word went out and every computer system was upgraded with sound files tied into the sensors. No more would an attack go unnoticed. Pilot lives were saved!

Commander Jamersom was hailed a hero but with his usual modesty he said the thanks go to Frontier Developments and a game called Elite Dangerous that gave him the idea. He then mentioned he found an even older game called Elite and it also had sounds for space ships. Imagine thousands of years ago they had the brilliant idea that sounds help a pilot and can save lives. It is a damn shame that we lost so many people because some thought no sound in space and so there should be none, when all along we could simulate the sounds and save lives and make space travel more entertaining and safe.

That is why there is sound in Elite Dangerous it is to save lives.

Sound doesn't work in a vacuum. Your spaceship is not a vacuum therefore sounds works.
 
Turn off sounds, happy, happy, happy, for the rest of us well just have to stay sad with the fact its not realism.

But why do I hear the sounds toned down when the cockpit is broken? Its not audio speakers in my suit working, its clealry the ones form the ship. At this point the adio emitted by the ship should not work anymore

The sound of passing ships and near miss fire comes from your computer synthesizing it to help with spatial awareness. Things that HIT your ship, however, are going to make one hell of a racket, same with your engines and your weapons firing (since the vibration from that will pass through your hull to the atmosphere inside). As for how you can hear things, if muffled, when the canopy pops, its because the life support is still running the blowers so there's a very light atmo available inside the cockpit. Just enough to allow sound to transmit to your helmet and allow you to hear warnings through the remlok, but not enough to breathe.

Your ship assigns sounds to sensor telemetry to increase the pilot's spatial awareness. This is a system you'd definitely want in a real spacecraft of the type we fly in game. No contest.

As for why you still hear muffled sounds when the canopy blows out, sound doesn't just require air to propagate, it requires any medium. This can be the ship's hull, your seat, your suit, your body itself, and in reality it'll be all of the above.
So when you hear a thump from a cannon shell exploding across your hull, the sound waves from the impact are travelling all the way through the ship, up your body and into your ears from the inside even if there's no air around your head to propagate them the "easy" way.

You're most likely hearing the sound through your body. This is why people think they sound differently on a recording.

you must be a weird speciman of an alian ressonance body race if your blown up canopy still makes you understand the sound sof the ships that well, because I doubt the human body is that nicely transporting these kind of noises.

such a soundsytsem would have to be attached soemwhere diderctly at the ehad, but then it would sound entirely different than the ships voice and not just be a bit more toned down.

Vibrations through the hull and / or backup speakers in your helmet and / or it's a game. Pick one. :D

*shrug* you will hear sounds in complete vacuum if you touch the source of it, provided you're not actually deaf (be it due head trauma or birth deficiency). And unless your pilot goes free-floating in the cockpit without touching any part of the ship whatsoever, they'll hear something or other the loudspeakers send as vibrations along the solid matter.

now take some earphones put them into an mp3 player put them on max volume and press them at your butt or back and see how you hear sound being transferred through your body

There was a great deal of genetic engineering done in the 26th century. Some people can smell sound now, others can hear flavor so it all works out.

Turning off your life support kind of actually turns on your life support (the countdown begins).
