The Arrival

So, more than two years ago, the FSN INDEPENDENCE set out from the bubble amid Thargoid attacks, her destination the Eta Carinae star system. Today, after scanning hundreds of star systems, and nearly 2000 planets, the ship arrived at Eta Carinae.

I must admit, after travelling so far, for so long, it was disappointing to find I was not the first person... not even the second to visit this system. I suppose it's to be expected, by now, pretty much every noted astronomical feature has likely been visited by SOMEONE. No matter, I've made it to my destination. Now, the return journey...

A quick question on that subject, is there a way to find the nearest populated system, or do I have to search around manually?

Well, I'm not looking for an immediate base, I wanted to know the closest base back in the bubble, so I could plot a course there. I mean, I could just pick the system where my other ships are, but I was thinking it would be nice to get a repair in as soon as I can (I have no idea how my ship's structure is holding up).

Unfortunately, there are no outposts you can visit that lie in between the star Eta Carinae and the Bubble. The Eta Carina Nebula, which curiously does not exist within the nebula that was created by it but lies 1000 LY further out, is one of the few large named nebulae that does not have a starport present. The starbase in the Thor's Helmet sector is marginally closer, but it's 30 degrees off the straight-line route so would constitute a significant detour on your homeward trip. The only other option is the Pencil Sector base, but that's so close to the Bubble you may as well not bother making that deviation. Morgan's Rock in the NGC 6188 Sector is also closer, but at a 40 degree deviation corewards

The DSSA Network is really aimed at supporting explorers who travel much, much further away from Sol than Eta Carinae. I don't know if the EDSM map is comprehensive, but the nearest DSSA carrier to you is the Ironside, in the Plae Aec sector - about two-thirds of the distance to the Bubble, but way off in the direction of the Galactic Core from where you are.

The Eta Carina Nebula is a popular tourist and explorer destination - one of the few big, bright nebulae in the poorly-endowed eastern spiral arms of the galaxy. Anyone heading in that direction will probably also stop off at Eta C itself while enroute. EDSM reports 474 EDSM-users visiting the Eta Carinae system, including 14 in the past week and 4 in the past 24 hours. If you've been flying in more or less a straight line to get to Eta C, then you've probably been encountering an awful lot of already-explored star systems. I recall when I did the Eta C run four years ago, the straight-line was quite thoroughly explored even back then and I commented so in my travel-diary post. So if you don't mind a slightly longer trip home, I would recommend taking one of those detours - once you're off the tourist trail, you should find the majority of systems that far out will be Unexplored.

Eta Carinae itself hosts two carriers according to eddb :)
If the owner allows you could already sell your data there to be safe for your return trip. But you'd get 25% less credits compared to a station...

Mehh, I just set course to go back to Sol. Been a while since I visited the old homestead... now... 450 jumps to get there. This is going to take a while. Maybe this time I won't keep stopping to scan systems unless there's something good in it. I'd rather not spend another 2 years on the return journey.

Pencil nebula, New Growth I think it's called, but that's just off the top of my head.
