The Bard's Tale IV

Seeing how well they did with Wasteland 2, I'm very excited. I'll backing this one for sure.

The original trilogy (Amiga Version) was my gateway drug into CRPGs. I still remember that damnable maze in Kylearan's Tower, mapping that out of graph paper was so infuriating when I was 11.

Darkness, anti magic and spinners on the same square. Imagine
the forums whining if they did that in a modern game.

Ah, good times.

Five minuteness passes. The ice wind is chill. The aardvark licks at you. Examine all ceilings. Look up.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I only ever played the 'new' one I guess. The one where Cary Elwes does the voice of the Bard. I did like that one. :)

Jenner, grab DOSbox and play the old ones, and take a whole heap of graph paper :) Even today, it's a gaming experience like no other. It will enlighten you, entertain you, and utterly frustrate you all at the same time - simply brilliant gaming.

It's proper old-school dungeon-crawling. If it seems too limited, then try the Eye-of-the-Beholder series, but although the graphics got better and there was more involvement, the puzzles got more simple. All of them are still worth a play though!

Hm interesting, I'll keep an eye on this one. Tbh I preferred Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder but this was fun as well.

The Bard's Tale IV kickstarter is alive and kicking - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/the-bards-tale-iv

If you back at $20 or higher within the first 24 hours you get to choose a copy of Wasteland 2, The Witcher or The Witcher 2.
Wasteland 2 is getting a free GOTY update later this year - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts/1223310

And backed!

The Bard's Tale and the orignal Elite are the reason a play video games to this very day.

Also Wasteland 2 was really good, so Brian Fargo and inXile and have got a lot of good will with me now.

Archmages, please :D and a Wind Dragon in the special slot just for fun :D

I'd forgotten about Archmages, I NEED ALL THE SPELLS, ALL OF THEM! That was the reason I grinded exp on the 4x99 Berserker horde in the Castle, I think I reached level 120 with some of my characters leveling my two magic users through all the classes.

I'm in two minds.

One the one hand Mr Fargo did the original Bards Tale - the real ones

On the other he also did the 2004 travesty of the same name.

Provided he goes back to the spirit of the proper ones I'll be happy but if he lapses into 2004 remake mode ...

Edit:

Archmages? Meh. Geomancers are where it's at.

It's a direct sequel to The Bard's Tale 3, a party based dungeon crawler. Old school grid movement, pseudo turn based combat and puzzle heavy RPG. If you've got doubts just wait for it to come out, I'm sure it's have no issues getting backing and then some.

The console Bard's Tale, which I bought because Brian Fargo was involved . It was actually quite fun, but pretty weak otherwise - it's worth playing for the barrel quest alone. But it was disappointing for the old fans. However It and subsequent games was the reasons they ditched the publisher model for kickstarter - they'd been making compromised, mediocre games aimed at mass appeal and they were sick out it.

In my opinion, they redeemed themselves with Wasteland 2. I backed the kickstarter, but wasn't overly optimistic at the time. But it turned out great. I'd do recommend you pick up Wasteland 2 and give it a go, and they continue to support and improve it since release.

Also if you haven't already, pick up the Legend of Grimrock games, they're a modern take on the old school dungeon crawlers and both are fantastic. They're pretty much the benchmark that The Bard's Tale IV will need to live up too.

Love that trailer. Chris Roberts put this on the Star Citizen news feed so it gets a nice boost to visibility.
