The battle for Upsilon Aquarii or Battle of the Instancing

One of the first major battles of 1.3 happened recently. It involved around 3 Federal wings + random Fed players against around 3 hostile wings from the Empire and pirate groups. Both sides answered their factions call to arms and what would have been an epic battle ensured.
However this is where the real problems with the game came to light and really showed the game is not yet ready for faction warfare, at least not until the elephant in the room is addressed.

Instancing

There were horrible instancing issues that almost ruined the entire battle. They came in three main varieties that need to be fixed:

Empty instances:

When we have a P2P system designed to support 32 players per instance why is it that each supercruise instance seems to be capped at around 12 players max. Even having 12 players was rare and more commonly instances would stop at around 6 to 8 players. Previously this could be worked around with the wing drop/beacon exploit. Now with 1.3 if your allies are not in supercruise with you, chances are they wont be joining you in the fight. This basically caps battles at 4 v 4. Or even worse guarantees one side victory because they have 2 wings in supercruise against your one.

Not being put in the same instance as your own wing:

This happened numerous times where a fight would start and when the rest of the wing dropped into the wake they would be put in a completely empty instance, while they player who was interdicted found themselves in a 1v4 with no way to get help. If the instance has 5 people in it why on earth would a new instance be created especially when everyone is dropping on wing beacons. This needs to be fixed immediately.

Invisible players:

During many fights multiple players on both sides of a fight would be invisible to each other. Your wing would be attacking someone that you could literary not see or interact with. This issue seems to defy all logic and can absolutely ruin fights when your wing mates are being killed by players you cannot see and help them with. Even more frightening is when they can see you but you can't see them, resulting in you being shot at by nothing and left with no choice but to flee from nothing.

A good example of this was CMDR Digital Mandalorian who was for the entirety of the night invisible to everyone in my wing bar me, and later another wing mate who replaced someone. That Dropship would have been a very tasty kill if only people could see it :(
While 1.3 is awesome all it has done for me is highlight just how much work needs to be done on the net code before actual factional warfare can become a thing.

I truly struggle to see how the game could release on console with these kinds of issues still present. Console players are not going to have the same tools and know how when it comes to finding work a round's for instancing issues. The people I play with and myself are willing to jump in and out of systems instance hoping for 20 min to find a fight. I really don't know anyone who plays on console who will screw around doing that for 20 min. Tese issues need to be fixed as the number 1 priority if the game is going to have a future. FD you gave us the tools to have faction warefare but the instancing is just not able to support that yet, we really need this fixed ASAP.

1.3 indeed has the potential for such epic battles. Been part of several 32 (+ ?!) player battles in 1.2 which seemed to instance very decently.

Please FD don't let ED regress but on the contrary improve netcode / instancing, whatever it takes. Imo this needs to be the Nr1 bug to squash.

For the rest keep up the good work, PP is great fun and game getting better with every patch! (except instancing / grouping :) )

Just a bump for your thread mate as I feel it deserves more attention.

Since 1.3 matchmaking has been even worse. The most I've seen in an instance was 7 v 4 battle in 1.2 but since 1.3 this is impossible.
Tonight I got killed in Python by a wing of 4. It was a 2 v 4 battle. Some great fights we killed a few of them and they got me. So with my blood pressure up and waiting for revenge my mate arrives from 120 LY away to join the fight. But no - he cant join the wing. I cant even send him a message. We tried everything for 1 hour (exit game. close client...) while the guys who got me are still in sc.
I dont care about money, or rebuy costs or getting killed but this stupid mechanic deprived me of something greater - revenge. I can just imagine how the 3 of us would have blasted those 4 guys into oblivion.
This could have been one of those special moments. An epic battle which we would have re-told for months to come. If only...
For the first time since beta I am seriously considering uninstalling the game. Having waited for 15 years and backed it in KS I am so disappointed it has come to this.

You are right. This rules out huge pvp battles and has a big impact on pvp guilds. It rules out even 2 wing vs 2 wing fights (8v8) never mind 16v16.

Fd fix the instancing please. It is game breaking. :(

You're a brave bunch, doing Battlefront: Galactica over a p2p network, I tell ya! ;)

I did have a world of trouble keeping up with mere 3 people in a wing. People disappeared, ended up in the wrong place, we had to re-establish the wing, etc. Definitely not an environment to even start thinking about 8v8 or 16v16, especially considering the fast-paced nature of combat.

Not to mention there isn't a visible reason to engage in large scale confrontations right now, outside of doing it for the fun of it.

Game was designed primarily as a single player experience.

And due to this, multi-player functionality doesn't work properly and probably never will. (see solo mode completely undermining any PvP multiplayer mechanics, and as above instancing)
