Hardware & Technical 'The Beast' 400W fanless case & upcoming 40" LG Ultrawide

Not much is known about LGs upcoming 40" ultrawide monitor.
Displayninja.com says it will have an impressive resolution of 5120x2160 pixels compaired to a 3840×1600 res in their current 38" screens.
It's got a Nano IPS panel and one would assume 1ms response time like all their recent IPS panels.
It will have 98% DCI-P3, 2500R curvature and with a current release date (or maybe manufacture date?) of Q1 2021.


In other news MonsterLabo will follow up their current 19 liter SFF case "The First" with their new "The Beast" case - capable of 400W fanless cooling (up to 150/250W TDP for the CPU & GPU.).

Looking at their "The First" case (released in december 2018), it lists support for Geforce RTX 3000 gen cards and is currently compatible with two AMD AM4 B550 motherbords (released by AMD in June of this year). Both of those come passivly cooled (compaired to X570 AM4 boards with their loud chipset fans), and naturally comes with a PCI-E 4.0 16x slot.
Also that case is more limited since it only supports Mini-ITX motherboards.
"The Beast" with support for ATX, mATX and mITX will have so much more to choose from.

It's great to see some innovation regarding PC cooling, to be honest I'm a bit tired of fan noise and would love to see more quiet solutions like this one. However, 400W seems a bit short, as newer GPUs seem to be hitting higher TDPs again.
 
This isn't the first passive enclosure/heatsink combo (the Zalman TNN 500 from 2005, or any of the much later Calyos enclosures come to mind and I'm sure there are many others), but it is one of the more modern/normal looking and compact ones, at least for a full size form-factor.

However, 400W seems a bit short, as newer GPUs seem to be hitting higher TDPs again.

Passively cooling a 600+ watt system is not easy and this is already a very niche market. Pretty much anyone looking for a silent build at the higher-end of performance will just have a big water loop and low rpm fans.

You could always add a pair of nearly silent fans to this MonsterLabo case and double it's cooling capacity if the case it self strikes your fancy.

Also "once you remove the factory cooling (from your graphics card)" .... yeah, I think I'll pass.

It's out of my price range as well but "The First" seems more and more interesting to me.
I've been looking for a decent SFF case a long while now and at €349 (or €229 for B-Grade) you're not only getting a compact fanless case but also a decent CPU & GPU cooler.

The Geforce RTX 3060 Ti has been rumored to land at 180W TDP - I will probably go for the RTX 3060 and a quiet 140mm fan that only activates during gaming. When playing Elite Dangerous I'm certainly not going to notice a silent 500rpm fan.
You should be able to do something similar with "The Beast" if you do need more GPU thermals then 250W TDP and only have those 2-4 fans running during high loads.
And you'll have great thermals for an overclocked CPU as well.


Also concerning compatibility for future motherboards and graphics cards - the motherboard tray and gpu ports are not connected to the sides of the case. About "The First" case, they have this to say:
"If your cables are length enough, no need to buy additional extending cables. Simply remove the back panel part at the back of the case, and connect your cables through the empty slot to your motherboard (USB, RJ 45) and graphic card (HDMI, Display Port).
So that means that much more motherboards and graphics cards will be supported going into the future.
 
I'm also interested in going with a 32 inch 1440p IPS screen - there will be no need for VR with such a screen in my opinion

There's currently a 170Hz Acer screen (link) and a 175Hz Asus screen (link) and more coming. IPS is the superior screen technology over both TN and VA. These 32" IPS gaming screens are brand new and work better as regular screens then ultrawide sceens. A true 32 inch screen will be ~1.2 inches larger in height compaired to LGs 37.5" screens aswell and much cheaper.

The upcoming 32 inch Acer Predator XB323U GX can be overclocked to 270Hz and will release next month according to DisplayNinja.com. If the price is right this will most likely be my next screen allthough I would prefer a Nano IPS screen over that one.

Eh, extremely skeptical of the efficiency of the fanless cooling. It'll always have colossal thermal inertia. Yes, it will soak up lots of heat at first and cool nicely but when at capacity it won't expel it quickly enough. Radiation is the least efficient method of heat transfer. Especially when surrounding heated air doesn't get out of the way quick enough. I don't know. I'm struggling to think of anybody who would want this. As mentioned in this thread previously - there are better ways to make a silent system. And I certainly don't believe that market for completely silent systems and high performance cooling overlap that much. So, who is this for then?
 
I'd really like to see more on the 40" monitor as I've targeted EOY or Q1 2021 to upgrade monitor and graphics card.

I'm leaning toward the 38GL950G-B and a new card once Nvidia 3k and Big Navi actually have some stable inventory.

But - heck yeah, 40" with better specs might be attractive if the refresh rate and price are attractive. Might need the 3080 20gb model to drive that at 5120x2160 pixels with G-Sync @144Hz

Radiation isn't the primary method of thermal transfer here, natural convection is. The figures listed are also for steady state dissipation; a ~400w load is an equilibrium load, producin some arbitrary temperature delta that should be safe, with no fans.

I guess it comes down to one's threshold for silence. Personally, I consider fans with good bearings to be functionally silent (or at least quieter than the coil whine coming from power conversion components) below 800rpm or so, but others may have quieter ambients, better hearing, or just be more picky. Maintanance/reliability could also be a concern for some. With the only air flow being from convection, there is less dust that will gather on components (though it also makes filters impractical). More importantly, with no moving parts, there are far fewer points of failure.

But yeah, it's a very niche target market.
 
LG has unveiled its new lineup of monitors for 2020. Included in the 2020 lineup is a new UltraWide display with Thunderbolt 3, new UltraGear gaming monitors, and the UltraFine Ergo display. For Mac users, the leading option is a new 38-inch Curved UltraWide QHD+ monitor. As a Mac user it's much more better for me
