The benefits of an unrestricted Open and why every Corvette should carry a fighter

Despite some initial bitterness between the Cutter and Python CMDRs, all involved had fun here and I wound up with both CMDRs on my friends list.

Also, SLFs are my favorite big-ship addition ever. They plug a vast hole in the versatility of the big three and add some interesting options to the smaller ships that can carry them.

In multi-crew, it can, but it would be nice if any combination was possible inside and outside of multi-crew.
For Multi-crew to actually be of any benefit rather than just fun, there has to be a bonus for it. Launching your second fighter via MC is a good solution imo. It's similar to getting an extra pip for a Player gunner.

There would be benefits even if you could launch multiple AI crew outside of multi-crew and without the extra pips.

A good CMDR SLF pilot is vastly more effective and useful than an Elite NPC SLF pilot.

Long range feedback cascade railguns in has rez, expecting some pvp? [noob]

All my ships are built around the idea that I may have to defeat or escape from hostile CMDRs. This even applies to my exploration vessels.

I don't really see any disadvantages to using a PvP-centric setup for nominally PvE content. If it can stand up to CMDRs, it can annihilate NPCs by the legion. Just the SLF and and huge beams will take out NPCs as fast as they'll spawn in Haz RES, and I will never have to use any ammo or other consumables against them.

Let me get this straight. A Cutter couldn't fight off and destroy a fighter lol you are kidding right? This has got to be a stunt. Even a couple of turrets would have been sufficient. The Cutter pilot didn't put up any fight at all! Completely passive maneuvers.

No stunt.

He was all MCs and none of them were turrets. Not that turrets would have been a perfect defense. Non-long range MC rounds are pretty easy to dodge. The lead indicator will essentially never be correct if the target's movement vector is constantly changing and there is very little margin for error if the target is only a few meters across.

Even hit scan turrets often have extreme difficulty hitting SLFs. Railguns, missiles, and fixed beam lasers are your best bet against another CMDR in an SLF.

Ummm. Curious. Or a frag canon I guess... Pepper spray technique... Personally, I never have an NPC pilot. And if I use a SLF it's only for surface recon. But then I don't do pvp either :p

You using medium or small railguns?

Isn't using the bandwidth meter a bit exploity?

;)

As an early warning system, sure. However, it's also the only way to make sure I'm still connected to the transaction/authentication servers as well. It also has limited utility when you are in an instance with someone else that you know for certain is there.

Frag cannons are by far the least useful weapons, other than perhaps torpedoes, against SLFs.

Not enough pellets will hit an SLF to knock it out unless the SLF happens to park itself in front of your frag.

Smalls.

Yea, I should really return to using 2 small railguns again. There's not much point in not having those on the Corvette, I miss them.

You make me want to improve my current loadout, which is leaning too heavily towards PvE atm (all infinite ammo thermal).

HEY!!!! It's you!!! Yeah that was some good fun last night, I must admit the continued "conversation" of the other player was distracting me a bit (hard to type and fight! although I was a bit nefarious in my encounter with him soooo yeah arguably not unexpected LOL, I was someing of a villain last night), but yes it was pretty darn hard to hit that little thing! You were strong - I couldn't handle your vette with my laser anaconda either, even with fighters - thanks for the battles man, good times!!

That was my trade cutter, I decided to bring it into the RES at the CG for some bounty hunting, I like the 5a prismatic shield. I still need to engineer its weapons and am not completely set on the loadout. I am still pretty new to PVP (doesn't seem to find you much unless you go looking for it) but have been enjoying it for the most part.

I am in the process of setting up some PVP ships too - I keep getting distracted. I am considering putting fixed frags on my other cutter and engineering them with double shot and quick reload (it has an 8a prismatic shield with around 8k shields) and using it for close range battles. I am planning to build a corvette with rails and efficient plasma and a FDL with the same, also a PVP DBS and viper for some fun smaller ship combat, not sure of the loadout yet. But I think that will be the next stage of the game for me.

OUCH!!! No mercy LOL. Yeah I couldn't hit the thing, almost got its shields down once and that's about it. It was the original reason I stopped using multicannons in PVE...although once I engineer them it might be better. Also using fighters of my own is preferable - my battle cutter runs a size 6 as does my PVE (efficient laser) anaconda.

Dedicated PvE players are always like this. They have no experience with organic PvP in the wild and look at everything through the lens of how well they farm NPC's in their uber engineered godmode platforms of Death. "Gosh! How hard could one little teeny tiny SLF be? Why, I melt NPC's all day loooong in MY Cutter and can pretty much watch Orange Is The New Black reruns on the other screen at the same time!"

The truth is when you're an inexperienced PvE player learning the ropes for the first time, having a human player who is exceedingly experienced at PvP show up in an engineered Corvette and start kicking your all over the place it can be as intimidating as hell. Overall, great attitude on your part--it's nice see you come onto the thread with your perspective.
