General / Off-Topic The benefits of pc gamming.

The biggest benefit of PC gaming is the ability to upgrade the hardware on demand. For instance, you can buy a new graphics card to play heavier or newer games.
It's true but when we see the current prices of graphics cards, we can also buy a new more powerful console.

I also think that one of the biggest advantages of the PC is the quality.

I upgraded my dual graphics cards in SLI mode doing professional audio/video on a 7 year old Windows 7 Pro PC to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti on a 34in Acer Predator widescreen 3440x1440 gaming monitor running in ED Ultra mode without any issues. Maybe the latest greatest 3090 Nvidia card costing $3000 - $4500 isn't needed to play Elite Dangerous at the moment.

Words of wisdom here.

What did you have as cards in SLI mode before ?

MSI GeForce GTX 680 N680GTX Twin Frozr 4Gb Video Cards.
One started overheating so I pulled it. Later I wanted to go to a curved widescreen monitor thus I found the reasonably
priced GTX 1660 Ti more than satisfied ED requirements as well as having browser windows open in the background.

This couldn't be more timely. I'm on the verge of buying a curved 34" monitor and would like to upgrade my GeForce GTX 1060 GPU. I have been considering the GTX 1660 Ti as well as one of the RTX cards (not the 3000-series).
Are you using the G-Sync features of the card/monitor? Are you happy with the frame rates that you're seeing with the GTX1660 Ti?

I set G-SYNC for windowed and full screen.
The Acer Predator X34 monitor does 3440x1440 100Hz.
It can overclock to 120Hz but is not needed.
Elite Dangerous set to 100Hz refresh is a solid 99 FPS in Ultra mode.

I can run ED at 2560x1440 windowed with additional EDDB, Inara, Forum browser windows.
I also run ED full screen at 3440x1440 borderless using the keyboard Windows hotkey
to access the browser windows. Full screen shines running around in an SRV. No problems
running ED cruising to a station and watching an ED YouTube video.

X-Plane 11 (PC), No Man's Sky (PC) and X4 Foundations (Steam) also work great.

32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600MHz RAM

Internet speed 227 down 22 up MBPS.

Of course none of this fixes Frontier server dropouts! :)

Enjoy

That's really good to hear. There are numerous comments/articles 'out there' that say the GTX 16xx series is great for your 1080p gaming but you should consider something more for the high-screen-res gaming. I was really doubtful about that because my GTX1060 does great at 1080p/60Hz games.
The display I'm very likely to purchase is also 3440x1440. It can do100Hz, but 120Hz is native. That's one of the primary reasons I was considering a RTX-based board, just a bit more horsepower. If you don't splurge for the 3000-series (I won't), they are not much more expensive than the good GTX1660 Ti boards at the moment so that's an interesting place to be.

I really look forward to having access to a browser, etc. when I'm in-game without popping out. Whether that means that I run ED windowed or I keep my 1080p display as a 2nd depends on how weird it is setting up a high-refresh-rate display with a 60Hz display.

I appreciate hearing about your experience!

Plus the ability to play old classics! New games tend to look much better but have inferior playlength and gameplay for me (older games being more SP focused than modern MP stuff).
another case in point: When Crowbar Collective re-did Half Life, it was gorgeous and completely worth revisiting. I believe that it was actually longer too. Fun fun fun!

If you are considering VR I don't have any input using the GTX 1660 Ti. One of my eyes is failing so spending a lot on VR might not be wise. Those who play in VR probably never went with a 1660. If you buy one let the Forum know. Meanwhile the card runs reasonably at 70C driving a curved monitor.
