I have a Thrustmaster T-16000m joystick and I've found it to be much more precise and accurate than an xbox 360 controller, however it's more difficult for me to get into those rotating stations. However that's probably just because I'm still used to using a gamepad and still haven't gotten used to the joystick.
In either case, no matter what you choose, I would recommend getting and setting up voice attack. If you set it up properly you most likely wouldn't have to use the keyboard for anything when used in conjunction with a gamepad or joystick.
