General / Off-Topic The Best James Bond movie

The best James Bond film. Does that have anything to do with the Elite games? Maybe not. But then lets take another look per the Devs who were influenced with 007 at times.

My pick is On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). Yes the world went nuts with Goldfinger and Thunderball but artistically with Michael Reed as Director of Photography and John Barry doing the music plus Peter Hunt directing with an A-list of Hollywood talent to support him OHMSS was the most cinagraphic moment in the Bond movies. Forget that George Lazenbry was Bond. Actually he did well per the transition to another Bond after Connery. But I'll always remember Diana Rigg as Tracy.

But it wasn't about the actors. The production values set the standards for Bond movies to come including the 20 minute ski screen which later Bond movies with Roger Moore tried to duplicate but could never compete with the original.

The point is when lightning strikes it happens only once. ED is about looking for that lightning strike. Let's see if it hits.

Love Bond films, have them all on DVD. I'd have to say Dr No as that was the one that started it all and its still really good today.

Having lived through all the Bond actors since the 60's I'd also say that Connery is my favourite but closely followed by Brosnan. ...with Dalton, Craig and Niven being the worst. also I'd like to say that Michael Billington (aka Colonel Paul Foster) would have made a great James Bond, shame it didn't happen.

You only live twice. Ludicrous plot. I mean surely you'd notice someone digging out a volcano but for that reason i love it!!

In speaking of the future, the next James Bond "Spectre" which will be released at the end of next year, will be, perhaps, excellent. Like ED at the end of the next year ?

I liked the title that Edge Magazine came up with many years ago that tried to combine many of the Bond titles, and that was "The Spy Who Fingered My Goldeneye With Love" :D

I enjoyed the Roger Moore films most when I was growing up, so either The Spy Who Loved Me, for its general craziness, or The Man With the Golden Gun for having the best villain in the entire franchise.

I was a kid in Egypt in the late 70's so never really heard of James Bond till we stopped over at someones place overnight before the flight back out to Blighty and our hosts had a VCR. The first James Bond was On her Majesties secret service. So that is my favourite, I really felt for him when his wife dies at the end, plus I always had a soft spot for Diana Rigg growing up. Always a toss up between her and Linda Carter lol.

LOL!

My fave 'Bond' is Connery. Closely followed by Dalton. I loved the grittier feel that Dalton brought, but Connery will always be king. Can't stand Craig. Bond is not supposed to be tall, blonde and goofy-looking....

Fave movie would be Living Daylights or Goldfinger. If you ever get the change to read Flemming's description of the golf game between Bond and Goldfinger. Do it!

Also, I found Commander Bond in game!

Cheers

2006 Casino Royale for me - I've never taken much to the late-Connery/Moore/Lazenby/Brosnan films for some reason. I prefer a good drama over spectacle any day, and the '06 film had that in spades - Quantum of Solace did too, to some extent.

But I understand why the other films are so popular - it was actually something a movie reviewer once said (paraphrased here a bit) during a review of Skyfall: "James Bond isn't really a character in the conventional sense. He's not there to tell a story, he's there to take the audience on a tour of his very exciting world. And if you start taking those little details out of the films, you very quickly just end up making a very good action movie and not a James Bond movie."

And its not like I didn't enjoy the first 20 Bond films - I enjoyed the heck out of them (Die Another Day is probably my favourite of that lot, followed by Diamonds are Forever). I just wished they were a little more nuanced and...well....good (21st century and CGI experience strikes again...)

In speaking of the future, the next James Bond "Spectre" which will be released at the end of next year, will be, perhaps, excellent. Like ED at the end of the next year ?

OMG...new Aston. One thing I agree with Jeremy Clarkson on - Aston Martin don't make cars. They make pornography on wheels.

No particular favourite movie, but the best Bond was easily Brosnan, closely followed by Connery.

As an aside I met, and became friends with, the guy that did the title graphics, Maurice Binder, when I worked at Prontaprint Uxbridge. He was based at Pinewood Studios and came to my shop as we had the only colour copier in the area at that time. I also got to go to Pinewood frequently as we also printed for Image Animation (Hellraiser, etc.,) and I got to see a lot of sets first hand including the submarine pen from a Bond movie. Can't recall the film name but I'm sure it was one of Connery's. The only set I couldn't get on that time was for Alien as Sigourny Weaver was there.
