The bestest experience last night

My X-52 started to lose the will to live and slowly the control inputs became very hit and miss whether or not moving the flight stick would accomplish everything.

Normally you would think there would be a rant about it, no, quite the opposite, I had decided to pick a fight with a wing of 6 NPC ships. e verything was working fine when I took the first ship out. I started to realise something was wrong when the third ship kept evading me, it could turn tighter and quicker than me. by this time I was being attacked by the remainder of the vessels, this was getting serious, I didn't want to run, what choice did I have?

It took an age to finish the third ship, I had to run to let the shields build up, I was down to 71% hull, the beam laser was starting to overheat this close to the sun and still my controls were misbehaving, I couldn't keep the ship flying straight, I had to keep adjusting the controls to create some distance between me and not three angry ships, they started to chase.

My shields came back on, I'd realised that the ship had a permanent nose dive, was this the game or the controls? I didn't know, I dove round to attack the first ship, a T-9 this took some time to finish off, with the beam laser constantly overheating and now causing ship damage this close to the sun.

The remaining ships bugged out leaving me to wonder what was going on, was this part of the damage model or was I actually fighting with controls that weren't working?

I managed to make it to the station and get repaired, nope, it was the joystick with a mind of its own. i'ver never had to fight with the actual controls in any game but with a hotas that has a mind of its own that brought it to a completely different level of experience.

I now have to buy a new hotas as this one is close to seven years old, but its served me well and in its death throws managed to provide me with the single most immersive gaming experience i've ever had. I'm back tonight for more, try flying with a flight stick that wants to do its own thing, I fully recommend it, if i'd had an Oculus Rift I might still be playing now.

Still, good excuse to go pro now!

It would be better if damage to thrusters etc made turns more lengthy. They need to work on the damage in the game I think - I rarely see the effects of any damage reflected in my ship's control - the most I have seen is a cracked canopy. No matter how much damage I get I never seem to turn any slower and I similarily never see the enemy turn any slower either - its as if damage means nothing.

No alot of HOTAS out there with force feedback, but would def be a game changer if it was integrated into the game, As said above if the thrusters were damaged then you would have to fight a bit more to control.

Maybe down the line but only if it got a good bit of support. Glad you have a great experience with it, love a good session.

And just as I submit this is found this!!

I had exactly the same problem with my Cyborg stick - took it apart, sprayed the stick contacts (ie the moving parts which detect position) with Servisol contact cleaner, moved it around a bit, sprayed some more, put it all back together...and it works better than it ever did.

Don't chuck it....fix it :)

The problem with force feedback is there are patents and lawsuits preventing most manufacturers from touching it with a ten foot pole. It's really sad, as that's a heck of an immersive thing. Only when the patents are finally expired or invalidated will we see more of that kind of product. :/

When your thrusters are hit, the game actually WILL do what you thought it was doing, just not for very long, because otherwise you would just be dead in water. Still, whenever it happens to me, I pee my pants a little ;)

I have seen damage taken knock Flight Assist off for around 10 seconds a couple of times. I have heard drive damage leaves a ship dead in space too. Is that not what you mean? Or are you looking for pre-failure damage effects? Could be cool, depending on the thresholds. I'd hate to see it every time my shields get fully knocked out, but if it waits until the hull is all the way down to 20%, I am all but dead anyway and think component malfunctioning would guarantee that I wasn't going to make it out of that fight to experience the effects anyways. It would be a very fine line.

I had a similar experience when my Saitek pedals got jammed up somehow and I couldn't correct my aim to the left at all. You don't realize how much you use yaw, even nerfed as it is, until suddenly you can't in the middle of a fight!

I got out alive, then promptly ordered a set of CH pedals (should arrive today) to hold me until my Crosswinds are ready in July or so.

I then fixed the Saiteks as best i could, but this is the second time they've broken and you can only do so much with shoddy hardware.
