My X-52 started to lose the will to live and slowly the control inputs became very hit and miss whether or not moving the flight stick would accomplish everything.
Normally you would think there would be a rant about it, no, quite the opposite, I had decided to pick a fight with a wing of 6 NPC ships. e verything was working fine when I took the first ship out. I started to realise something was wrong when the third ship kept evading me, it could turn tighter and quicker than me. by this time I was being attacked by the remainder of the vessels, this was getting serious, I didn't want to run, what choice did I have?
It took an age to finish the third ship, I had to run to let the shields build up, I was down to 71% hull, the beam laser was starting to overheat this close to the sun and still my controls were misbehaving, I couldn't keep the ship flying straight, I had to keep adjusting the controls to create some distance between me and not three angry ships, they started to chase.
My shields came back on, I'd realised that the ship had a permanent nose dive, was this the game or the controls? I didn't know, I dove round to attack the first ship, a T-9 this took some time to finish off, with the beam laser constantly overheating and now causing ship damage this close to the sun.
The remaining ships bugged out leaving me to wonder what was going on, was this part of the damage model or was I actually fighting with controls that weren't working?
I managed to make it to the station and get repaired, nope, it was the joystick with a mind of its own. i'ver never had to fight with the actual controls in any game but with a hotas that has a mind of its own that brought it to a completely different level of experience.
I now have to buy a new hotas as this one is close to seven years old, but its served me well and in its death throws managed to provide me with the single most immersive gaming experience i've ever had. I'm back tonight for more, try flying with a flight stick that wants to do its own thing, I fully recommend it, if i'd had an Oculus Rift I might still be playing now.
Still, good excuse to go pro now!
