The beta.

ED is not those. ED is ED. FD is FD. Thankfully.

When FD can't find enough good testers (active backer numbers dwindle perhaps) then hopefully they will look to offer it. Cash or free, who knows.

Right now, you are seemingly not needed or possibly would hinder the process. Who knows.

Yes true, I was just giving the gent an answer to his question.

IDK, iv'e been mulling over this thinking recently.

I actually think the beta tester pool could be increasing. A lot of backers chose to eschew ED until it was a more finished game. As each update brings us closer to the completed vision, I think you might see those backers returning.

Of course, this is all just conjecture...boulder of salt

offtopic but if that's meant to be an ECG "heartbeat" in your signature image it's wrong fyi

Like blizzard games ( wow / diablo 3), PTR's all the time for the general public to test. I also recently got into a ViP beta of Act of Aggression, a new RTS by eugen systems.

Yeah, but they are invites to a Beta Phase. Not free access to beta because you've bought a game.

The problem with the way patches are done in Elite is that nobody really wants to play the main game until the patch is released. This is likely to be especially true with such a large patch incoming.

On the flipside if you went through the crap that I went through trying to get my Courier video done you wouldn't feel like you've been missing a lot. It's really buggy - far more than any of the others I've participated in - but that's just because of the sheer size and amount of changes.

TLDR: Really not missing much.

Edit - Also you could purchase into the beta quite late on - I bought in at 50 quid with a month to go on general release, which was 15 quid more than the game price I believe.

I paid for the Mercenary edition then £15 extra to upgrade to beta. £50 total.

Haven't got time to test it though unfortunately, what time I do have goes to live.

Also because the Beta players have paid to have access they tend to take the role more seriously, be more conscientious, report the bugs more carefully amd complain less....... no wait, thats not true. :/

I'm not in the beta and I don't feel that way. I would only just check out the new ships and that's it. Not much point pouring hours into something that's going to get wiped when you can enjoy it two weeks later.

i pledged for beta, but i did that to help out the game as i wanted it to be stable at release, not to get exclusive access!
imho it really should be open for all who wants to help.
