The Big Ship Upgrade

Hello fellow CMDR's! I thought it might be nice to know how everyone is getting on with the transition from small to medium ships. That big jump from a few hundred thousand credits into the millionaires ranks is both exciting and daunting. What was your first big ship upgrade? How did you find it and how gutted were you at the upgrade/insurance costs? How did your first week in your shiny new ship go? Heres my story and I would love to hear what others have experienced.

My cobra has been a trusty companion, hauling, exploring and bounty hunting and dealing with everything the universe can throw at it.. I'll never part with her but I have decided to sell the high class modules and see whats available to buy.

So... I finally take the plunge and drop in my local Starport showroom. Like a kid in a candy factory I cannot take my eyes off the shiny new Python.. I ask the salesman if he does interest free credit? By the sound of his laugh I guess I'm in the wrong market! I love the shiny new Python like a gleaming Ferrari, but its just a dream and I really cannot afford it without offering dubious services on steps of the imperial palace. So I usher myself across to the ASP. At over 6 million credits its not exactly the deal of the week but I have enough money and a couple of million spare.

Do I? Don't I?? ... I sign my name on the dotted line and bang.. she's there in the hanger!

The wallet is now looking a little bare but I am sure I can still manage to upgrade a little with a couple of million and still have change to trade a bit. Straight to outfitting I go and been the safety conscious type I go to the weapons section. This ain't so bad? A few cannons and a couple of beam lasers should do and I get pretty a good deal! Right then, over to the shields. OMFG HOW MUCH!!! I quickly realise that I am out of my financial depth here.. !

BACKUP PLAN! I can see this is going to be costly so lets look at what is cheap.. Ah! Nothing! Oh hang on.. Cargo racks are not too bad so lets beef up a bit. So I buy myself a few cargo upgrades and get her up to 92T. Lets face it I am going to have to make some serious money of I really want to get the ASP I really want. Thinking a couple of million would be enough was a bad mistake.

So after what was at least a couple of hours in the hanger I finally venture out. I could not stomach removing the shields for fear of losing everything I own but with 92T cargo and still all my modules I should be able to manage. I have a couple of good trade routes and its time to get some money back.

A couple of days of trading has quickly made me feel better, I now I can fill up my hold and cover my insurance.. phew! So I head off on a few more trade runs and she feels really good, manoeuvrable, sturdy, and reasonably quick. I gently dock her again and pick up my next load. I'm on TS comms with some friends bragging about my new purchase and singing its praises as I enter the dock.. Oh no! I have forgot to request docking permission. Don't panic I think.. you have done this many times before, just hit reverse thrusters and drift back out. I slam the throttle fully back and nothing happens? ? This thing just won't stop. Finally it comes to a halt and the thrusters start to kick in 10..9...8..7.. I have them on full bore but I have gone half way through the port before the momentum stops.. 6...5..4... A little pee starts to come out at this point.. 3.... 2...1.... All power to shields.. but its all in vain.. BOOM!

This life really bites you hard when you get it wrong. Of course its rage overload when you lose all your hard earned credits and assets. I don't think I have ever know a game that can be so cruel, that being said I like that about ED. Although from my colourful language when my ASP got vaporised would say otherwise. Still I have the insurance cost but it leaves me with less than 500k. So off I go trading again.. buy a few more upgrades and decided I need a break from the trade route. I hunt a few bounty's no problem then a couple of friends tell me about a battle at Kappa Fornica and ask me to come over..

I Fancied a bit of fun in a combat zone with a capital ship, so off I go kitted out for battle. A good hour of fun with friends and 150,000 in combat bonds, so I head back to cash in and put my feet up for a bit. After a well earned rest I decided that I should go back to the combat as I enjoyed it so much, but this time I am on my own.... Things are going well and its great fun.

I checked my combat bonds and I had nearly 200k to collect. Just 10 more minutes I thought then I can go and cash it in. Then a stray volley of cannons missed my target and hit the capital ship, everything on my scanner turns red and my shields are gone in less than 5 seconds and the dread of knowing whats coming covers you. BOOM! 750k re-buy cost, lost all my combat bonds and over 200k in bounty's too! I just had enough to cover the re-buy but then had to sell all my high grade ASP modules so I could buy cargo.

This is the 3rd time I have trashed my ASP, and I have only had it a week! I don't really have enough resources to have a second ship kitted out yet so she has to be a jack of all trades. So within seconds a 500k profit opportunity quickly becomes a 1 million loss.

The big ships are terrifyingly expensive.

I'm sticking to my Cobra. Making money in ED is not something that I've focussed on, and I doubt I'll ever be able to afford them.

If you want a giggle at my stupidity and a little bit of bad luck read my thread "How to lose 30 million credits in a few hours": https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=97913

For the big ships you need tens of millions in reserve. If you figure out how to the remove the 'stupidity' part of a brain I would be pleased to know how because 90% of my brain currently seems to run in stupidity mode :)

Yeah I find you really need two of three times the basic cost of a new ship before buying it, to cover upgraded modules etc. But for fully upgraded it’s more like 5 or 6 times. Use this tool before buying a new ship and it will show you what cash you need to get it how you want. It’s usefull.

On a side note, has anyone else notices it always seems to be the Asp that catches players with their pants down? I think that ship is cursed.

To the OP, well done for getting on with it after the big loss instead of another ‘I lost my Asp’ rage quit post.

The bigger they are... Actually I just upgraded from a Cobra to a 100T Type-6 to make enough loot to beef up the Cobra to full combat. But... Just before I sold the Cobra, I ran some illegal stuff, and blew myself up in the station by boosting into the slot. OK, I've still got enough to buy a Type 6 with a trade-in, and that 100T cargo makes for some fast money making. An hour later I'm up to 600,000Cr in cash, and I've been spend, spend, spend on the T6 to get the thrusters and FSD a bit, errr, classier, and A-class power distributor etc.

Then I buy 500,000Cr of metals and whack into a Type 9 about 30 seconds later. After insurance I have under 50,000Cr left.

And... I'm stupidly happy. This game makes you think. It makes the joy of decision making, and making good decisions pay. And it makes you regret mistakes, but in a way that you dust yourself off, try to learn and carry on. I could drop back down to an Adder, slope back into my Cobra, or downgrade my T6. Or I can just fill 'er up with 50,000Cr of Marine Equipment...

...and fly carefully!

OMG! Talk about riches to rags Sams! However reading your post link put a smile back on my face and made me realise that I obviously have nothing to complain about. Thats the most awful bad luck you have had there. Its such a huge jump just to an ASP but those Python and Anaconda costs are huge. I feel your pain on the war zone side of things, seems a good idea at the time lol

Got into trouble in my Cobra yesterday when I was slammed back through the letterbox by a big T-9 brick wall and ended up bouncing around on the floor of the station, timer ticking away I figured quickly I wasn't going to make it so just killed the game and reloaded, safely put outside the station problem solved ;)

My first big ship ever was the T9 in the Great Alpha Credit Infusion, when everyone received 1 million credits and that was enough to buy a T9 plus full cargo back then. I managed to not crash it but sold it after a few runs because I hated how sluggish it feels.

Thanks for the link.. That will prove very useful in the future. I love how the game really punishes you when you make mistakes or happen to leave your brain in a different galaxy, its still huts though. I half created this post as I was fed up with the RAGE QUIT virus that seems to sweep through the forums. Its not how hard you fall but how quickly you get up that defines a CMDR!

I've said this before but it applies doubly for big ships.....
Dont buy a ship until you can afford to buy it twice.

Just getting a workable loadout will cost you half the value of the ship and a good loadout will easily cost you twice the value. Then you need cash for trading and of course insurance should things go wrong.

I'm currently in the no-mans-land between Cobra and Asp. I traded/missioned/light BH in a cobra while I stored and slowly upgraded a top notch Viper. Currently that's pretty well upgraded, A class FSD, thrusters and power distributor, Class B power gen which will go to A soon (when I find one, pretty certain I know where to look), which I use for exclusively bounty hunting armed with 2xC1 beams and 2xC2 multis.

I recently traded in the cobra for a Type 6 which I utterly hate, it's such a lump of excrement but needs must, I want an Asp to replace my Cobra as a useful jack of all trades and trading to get the cash is much faster with 104tn capacity than 40.

My Type 6 is worth about 1.8M (base apart from max cargo, B class FSD for my trade run, D calss power gen to stop it melting every hyperspace jump and A class distributor for interdiction submit and boost to escape) and I have about 1.2-1.3M in cash so I reckon I need about another say 5-6 mil to get the Asp and upgraded to at least a low level trader which with 120tn capacity I should be able to turn a reasonable profit to gradually upgrade it to something fun.

My Viper is worth about 2 million but I'm not trading that in, it's far too much fun :D

Problem is there are people like me who are itching to buy the new ship as quickly as possible :)

I purchased the python with 25 million on top and it was only just doable.

I purchased the T9 with 30 million on top and it was too tight (few runs with no insurance).

I purchased the Anaconda with only 30 million above and it wasn't anywhere near enough. 50 million above the cost would have scraped me through with a little less risk.

If I was to do it again and aiming for the minimum:

Python + 35-40 million
T9 + 45-50 million
Anaconda + 60 million

I did it with my Type-6. Traded in a Cobra kitted for hauling for a Type 6. Only to find that I had barely enough money left to even put it on equal footing with the Cobra I sold. I now don't trade in ships anymore. I buy extra's so I can play with them a bit even before they're fully up to par.

I love my ASP. Just bought a shiny new skin... already sunk 20 million credits at this ship. And it will take another 15 to 20 million to make her full combat ready.

And i like the Type-6 too. This ship needs love :) and skins to buy .hehe. its a good small/medium freighter. Cheap, fast and can land everywhere.

I’m actually flying three ships right now (that’s right I don’t know what I’m doing).
Viper fully kitted for bounty hunting (almost 3 mill),
Type 6 for trading and a big rare’s pilgrimage (about 2.5 mill)
Cobra for faction missions for building rep and naval rank progression (almost 2 mill).
Between those and the 3 mill in the bank I have enough for an Asp but not enough to fit it well yet. I haven’t grinded in a while but will do soon and then sell the Cobra and Type-6 to buy the Asp.
I will never sell my Viper, ever. Even when I retire I think I’ll just spend all day polishing it with a diaper.

My first scare was the first time I bought a Python. I hadn't accounted for the sheer cost of the internals to fit it for trading and the fuel requirements, meaning that my first runs were with <100t, without a fuel scoop and were not much more than breaking even (50k fuel, 90k income, versus an average module cost in the 6 figure region).

In the end I had to sell and downgrade various internals (shield and power plant mainly) to buy a scoop and more cargo space.

About two days of very nervous defensive flying (along with a demonstration of how undersized my shields were, courtesy of an NPC Clipper...) and I was starting to solidify my insurance and module fund....

When I sold the Python for a T-9, I was caught out by the Founders world discount bug on ship prices, so what would have been a 22m buffer quickly became a 15m buffer, which when you consider the cost of making a T-9 useful, as well as the monumental size of the trading float required, cuts it pretty damn fine!

Eventually I sold my T-9 for a Python because it was just so awful, but at least now I had the readies to fit it out properly. Then I bought another T-9 (having found a run for it), but it did take me a few goes before the monumental cost of fitting out these monsters finally sunk in.

Reet clever, me...

I bought the ASP with 9 million in assets, and I quickly realised it was not enough but it was ok to kit out for trading.

Curse impatience and shiny new ships! I'll not fall into that trap again when upgrading my Type-6 to a Type-7, honest! *cough*
