The Big Ship Upgrade

You wanted to hear other stories, so here is mine:

After a lot of exploring and doing hauling missions in my Sidewinder, I went to buy a viper and kitted that one out a bit. My goal was a Cobra though, so I didn't spend too many credits on the viper. I bought the Cobra when I could afford it, but without thinking about the insurance. It went pretty well so far. Since Gamma I died only 4 times, 3 times was in the Sidey and at least one time was because I ended up in an empty system with not enough fuel to make another jump. Only once forgot to get landing permission and managed to back up and get out before someone started shooting at me. I have not made it to anything bigger than a Cobra yet. I am aiming for an ASP next, but only after my cobra is kitted out to maximum performance. And I am really curious to see what the Python is able to do. But that will take some serious amount of time.
My Cobra is now kitted out for combat - not everything A grade, but I invested about 4 Million into it. My latest purchase were 2 medium and 2 small gimballed beam lasers and I have something like 1.5 Million credits left to cover insurance like 10 times.
I do rare runs with the 20 tons of cargo space left on it and some bounty hunting/exploring on the way to the destination clusters. Somehow I have managed to get friendly with the federation without really wanting it, but since it is like this I will stay allied with the Feds now.

A few days ago I had my first "battle" with a real Commander and his Viper. I submitted to his/her interdiction and said "hello" (which I misspelled to "helle") but only got lasers as an answer. So I thought "this is my time to die" and fought back. Unfortunately it seemed that I was lagging pretty bad, so the CMDR texted me with "you lag". I replied "sorry" "didn't ask for it" and stopped attacking him. So we both went out of that with a good percentage of our hulls missing, but still alive. I really feel sorry that I lagged and seemed to have gained an advantage, but on the other hand I did not ask for this fight either. But I have learned from the experience. I will never again waste time typing some text to a Commander who interdicts me.
The next time I died was because I tried one of these 100k assassination missions. Turned out to be an Elite Anaconda and my skills are not up to that yet. As soon as the Anacondas laser show began, I started popping my shield cells. Much much too early, so I was out of them when I really needed them. My son was watching while I fought the Anaconda and he recommended fleeing to me several times. Of course he was right, I just did not want to give in. I find it funny how upset I get in a fight with an opponent that is either human or seems to be very dangerous. I mean, it's just a game, nothing to really get upset about. Even the long hours I put into it were all just because of the fun of it, so there really is nothing I can loose, just experience to gain. And still I have my hands shaking and my heart pumping after such a fight.

I just got aware of the Python last night. Flying a greatly equiped Viper (2,5 Mio. Cr) at the moment but I'm thinking of investing days Bounty Hunting to get the money for a Python

I've gotten to a type6 a few times now since beta. I have to say it is a great feeling when you cross the insurance threshold once again.

Thanks for sharing your story +1 REP (as was the purpose of this thread). Awesome! Loved my Cobra so much.

Traded my fully kitted Asp in for a Clipper last night with what I thought was more than enough cr to cover insurance and upgrade FSD at least, boy was I way off. And to top it off the jump range in the Clipper was soooo poor that I could barely reach any other systems to start trading.
Bite the bullet and sold it again (2 mil loss :( ) and had to re buy an Asp. Now all I have to do is re find the stations so I can upgrade it again.
wont be buying another big ship till I have a good 15/20 mil to spend on upgrades straight away.

My story started with a choice between a Cobra and an Eagle.

Chose the Cobra (obviously) and have never even set eyes on my Eagle, it's parked up somewhere (probably up on bricks...)!

If I can ever be bothered I might have a look one day...and probably sell it! :D

Traded, fought, adventured, and hunted across the light-years till I had a reasonable bunch of upgrades, then thought I'd try a Viper out, so I parked up the faithful Cobra in a Long-Stay Council Car-Park (guaranteed scratches and dings) and bought one.

Upgraded it and did some more missions & hunting, but eventually got bored with it, sold it and went back to my trusty Cobra (complete with scratches and dings).

A few creds more (there's a film title there somewhere...:p), and a few more upgrades, and then I found a decent 3 way trade (making about 3000/ton profit) so I bought a Lakon 6 - 100tons - so that's 300,000cr per round trip, taking about 25 mins!!!! :)

Well, it wasn't long before my Cobra was fully up-specced, and the Lakon too (for a truck!)

Then I had fun grinding a bit of cash, then hunting or doing missions, then back to trading and so on...

Until the day I made a slight error (smuggling) and suddenly my screen is full of red

So the last 2 weeks I've been a good boy, done a lot of missions, and LOTS of trading (having found a 12min, 2 system run that makes 2400cr per ton profit) with my Lakon.

I now have 8 mil in the bank, my Eagle (somewhere), my ninja Cobra, my pimped Lakon, and I just bought a Sidey (for a ferry ship so I can move my extensive fleet to the same location :D).

The plan is - grind a couple more mil with the Lakon (I say grind - it'll take about 2 hours ;)), then fly to Founders in the Sidewinder, buy an Asp, kit it out for trading (rep for E D Shipyard once more - damn useful site) and maybe sell the Lakon (worth 3 mil) and grind some more for top-spec Asp kit, then try it out as a combateer...phew!;)

On the other hand - I may not...it's an open game after all!

The most direct route is alternating between cargo and multirole ships kitted for trading. Sidewinder 10t -> Hauler 22t -> Cobra 60t -> T6 112t -> Asp 128t -> T7 232t -> Python 292t -> T9 532t
That is my route, currently on the Python, though from the T6 onwards I began taking at least the lowest shield. From Asp onward you really should. Any scratch in the hull will hurt your profit more than sacrificing one internal compartment. And the Python absolutely needs a fuel scoop, 1/4 to 1/3 of trade profits going into fuel is no fun, the T7 will do better then.

Short story from yesterday. Was pretty cool and wanted to boost out of the station which ended in crashing into the wall underneath the mail slot exit. *BOOM* Ship gone and the 136.000 Credits that I just made before wento into the insurance. This happened already before. :D

I think the key to not losing your mind is keeping a hangarful. Don't trade in your kitted out Cobra, keep it and run a T6 too. Cobra for fun, T6 for profit. I have my sights set on an Asp but won't even consider signing the papers until I have 30+ mil cash, not just assets. I intend to keep both the Cobra and T6 once I have my Asp. Flying around with enough insurance for 5+ crashes is smart too--I mean, once you get into these big ships, why on earth wouldn't you? Grinding sucks, grinding twice because the filthy vulture insurance brokers have broken you sucks worse.

I bought my first big ship this weekend after doing a rares trade run. I bought the Type 6. Lovely ship going to kit it out for trade runs and use the money to kit my Cobra out and then start to buy fleet of Cobras and customize each one, so I will have a pure combat, pure bounty hunter, explorer and mining ship. Keep the Type 6 as the money earner and maybe buy another T6 for mining maybe.

Very sensible advice here. I'm currently running a well equipped Viper and a T6. Plan is to get a bigger bank roll and get an Asp but I'll probably keep the T6 as a fall back should the worst happen - i utterly despise the ship in every way though. The Viper is a pure bounty hunting fun machine and I doubt I'll ever trade it in, it's just so much fun.

I need a fast courier ship for collecting bounties as I tend to get a lot on Imperial ones and I'm over 100ly from Imperial space annoyingly.

Given the amount of time I can actually play - the ASP is what I've set my sights on. So far gone from Sidey - Adder - Cobra - T6 and having now got bored with trading after making enough to re-buy a Cobra and fit it out as a proper multi purpose ship I'm probably going to go back to that or a Viper to get some rep up with a faction to see what opens up afterwards.

I'll keep the T6 and probably do a big rare loop (I have one that makes around 2 - 3 million if you can wait for the odd restock) when there's a footy game on that I can watch while I do it.

I reckon it will probably be another 3 - 4 weeks before I have enough to buy and outfit the ASP as I'm going to keep the T6 as an added insurance policy

I did Sidewinder -> Hauler -> Cobra -> T6 -> Asp (trader spec) -> T7.

The Asp was gutted last night for it's most expensive modules and put into storage while a T7 was bought. I'm pleased to see the T7 is similar costs to the Asp to run but 96T more cargo. I plan to kit out the Asp for exploration, should take me a few in-game hours.

Freeagle was sold very early on to boost trading capital, as a trader it hurts to have too much capital sitting around in un-used ships - it's just inefficient and you can always re-buy later when you are rich :)

Sidey - Hauler (for 2 trips) - Adder - Cobra. Yesterday I bought T6 and intend to try my wings on finding a trade route. If I am unlucky I might go to rare routes with that ~100t capacity. I would like to get my hands on ASP, but if that fails I will go back to Cobra for all-rounder and maybe Sidey as smuggling training ship. I have not yet stored any ships as I seem to be sort of wanderer.

OP, I loved your tale of danger and misadventure!

Congrats for handling your losses in such a good spirit!

The Asp is a great ship, but so expensive to outfit and maintain... And the insurance costs truly brings sorrow even to the most hardened heart.

That's why I went back to my trusty Cobra (which I can lose several times over, without crying too much, even fully fitted) and beloved T6.

Perhaps I go Asp again when I have some 60 million extra credits...

: )
