The biggest mystery in Elite Dangerous

It has become very obvious to me that a shadow power is behind the curtain, putting infrastructure and technology in place for some unknown purpose.

The most convincing evidence that such a shadow power exists? The FSD drive and its capabilities.

The FSD drive is capable of calculating and enacting jumps to star systems both explored and unexplored, and it can perform this function (apparently) anywhere in the galaxy, and most likely beyond. The repository of navigational information that comprises what we see in the Navigation Computer feed likely originates from some centralized database. Due to real time updates to this database, it can be surmised that the FSD is capable of some near-instantaneous telecommunications connection with that centralized database, let's call it the Omnibase.

We KNOW that the Omnibase is beyond political control and manipulation; if it were not, it would have become a tool of one of the superpowers or factions, because after all, what is more powerful than knowledge and the dissemination of that knowledge, in an age where knowledge dictates access to systems and their resources? But the galaxy that I see in my Navigation Computer is IDENTICAL to the one you see in yours, fellow CMDRs.

The Shadow Entity also controls access to all star systems via FSD lockout, which cannot be subverted. The superpowers have some input into which systems have restricted access, as do certain ubiquitous and super-influential factions, such as the Pilot's Federation. Powerful individuals sometimes have some influence on restricting access to systems as well. And for no apparent reason whatsoever, some entire areas of the galaxy have been withheld from being accessible.

The infallibility of the FSD, its absolute authority, and human dependence on this technology are all exceedingly troubling factors in this puzzle. Fellow Commanders, I have attempted to reverse engineer my own FSD drives, but have found that at the core of every FSD drive, regardless of size or rating, is a completely impenetrable device (I call it the Enigma Core) that somehow interfaces with the main (obviously human) technology of the FSD device itself.

I would be exceedingly interested if any other Commanders could shed some light on this technology and those who created it.

Big mistery is where has all the beige has gone? and is there a restaurant at the end of the universe?

Let's not. :p

It's all fairly plausible and explicable, really.

Our FSDs all operate using data provided by Universal Cartographics.
To use a real-world analogy, it's kind of like we can have any make of satnav we want but they're all powered by Google Maps.

Clearly, as a private organisation, UniCart can be incentivised to do a variety of things; private organisations can offer UniCart heaps of credits to ensure a system doesn't get published and governments can request that systems/regions remain unlisted or permit-locked etc.

It'd be nice if there were ways to circumvent UniCart's control over where we go and create some gameplay surrounding this idea but, in the mean-time, I guess we're just stuck with travelling around the places that UniCart provides data for.

I've long been of the opinion that by 3300, the Pilot's Federation had become a criminal cabal, manipulating Human space to the advantage of its members. The Elite Universe has always had a bit of a cyberpunk feeling to it IMO, only unlike most settings where the players are plucky anti-heroes struggling against the evil corporations that oppress the downtrodden, we are Big Bads of this setting. :D

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail
Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would
