The Black Market - Why is it so useless?

er i shipped 40 tons of food cartridges just yesterday. admittedly i was hoping the mission at the destinations would ask for them - but instead they asked for the domestic appliances which i had NOT brought that time because i saw missions last 5 journeys asking for food cartridges... its like they only put missions out for the things you ARENT bringing...

I peeked at the mission screen somewhere and saw a faction wanting a shipment of aluminum. I thought, "Hey, I just looked at the commodities, isn't aluminum available here?" Yep. Switched back, bought a bunch of aluminum, went back to the mission screen, and the aluminum mission was gone. Seems you will not be shown a mission if you already have what you need aboard your ship.

So Obsidian Ant's Black Market video today got me thinking.

I basically ignore the black market's in the game because they are basically useless. It's very rare that I end up with stolen or illegal cargo and the few times I do have any it's normally worth so little that I can't be bothered and I just dump it somewhere.

The main reason is that the current implementation of the Black Market makes no sense. Why can I only sell to a Black Market? Why can I only sell goods that are illegal in a given system? Why is it so limited?

The Black Market could be so much more.

  • We should be able to both buy and sell from a Black Market. Maybe not all goods that the commodities market has but things that would make sense for the system/station it's at.
  • We should be able to buy goods from a Black Market and use them to turn in missions but there is a risk. There is a chance the mission giver may notice something is off and that the goods are stolen/counterfeit/etc... The higher your rank with the faction, the more trusting they are of you and they won't inspect it as closely. This could let us buy from a Black Market and sell/turn in on a mission for more profit but if we get found out, there's a fine, reputation hit, etc...
  • Don't want to turn in that cargo Faction A wants you to take to Location B for a measly 25,000 credits? Sell it on a Black Market for 100,000 credits but your rep is going to suffer.

There is probably even more gameplay that could come from this that I haven't even thought of.

It's just a shame to see another thing in this game that could have so much more gamplay tied to it and it just doesn't.
I have to agree with you.

I also find it strange that all goods you find in space is illegal - with the exception of occupied pods, that recently got legalized.
And almost all you find on the ground is legal.

Illegal trading should be much more lucrative.
Because; that's why people trade in illegal stuff - they make much money. [yesnod]

Yeah, every station/port should have a blackmarket since the mechanic of closing one is utterly stupid.

Yes it is, actually.

The very reason for black markets, anywhere, at any time; the need for something that is difficult to get.
The worse the state, the bigger reason for a black market.

Great ideas, RAL!

At least we don't have to go in shouting "I WANT TO SELL ILLEGAL GOODS!!!"
In a bright orange jumpsuit... that says "FD DOC" on the back.

Orange is the new Black Market ya know.

The deal should be done while docked. The goods need to be transferred elsewhere. If the system authority is going to harass ships going in and out of stations, there really should not be a black market inside. It makes absolutely zero sense. Outposts in nowhere land? Sure, but you only find out they exist after you hit the allied rep with the faction that's got connections. Of course there'd be an ED Black Market Faction tool that everyone uses and then just grinds at docks where the markets will be revealed, so it's pointless.

I've been hoping for more grey-area gameplay for years, though I stopped actively waiting around for it some time ago.

Generally speaking, anything you sell to the back market is pure profit, and i've made quite a bit of money from them selling stolen goods. So they are far from useless. Could they do with more functionality? Sure, why not? But they are useful right now for those who play shady characters.

This would be something that the karma system would be great for. Positive/negatives karma would give you benefits/detriments depending on where you docked. It will never happen.

If FD ever pull their finger out and revamp C&P like they should (as it's one of the few things, coupled with piracy, that people have been begging for since release :O) then the black market would be a fantastic thing for those that wish to skirt the law. It should have nothing to do with the Karma system though (player on player interaction) as that is basically for out game actions, whereas the BM was for stolen goods & contraband.

As it stand the Black Market is sadly YAPH*

Well... I find the smuggling pretty usefull as a BGS mechanic.
It's a nice way to undermine a faction.

In the other hand... Yes, I would like a little more complexity with this mechanic.... and others too.
Your ideas sound fine to me.
