I *guess* they didn't like my sloppy landing so they nooked me.

The part that was bad was that I'd purchased some better equipment for my vehicle and it has been apparently lost forever.
I thought I'd indicated that I wanted to buy it back via insurance but either I did it wrong or it bugged out.

Do you simply buy stuff back via insurance after you die or did I mess up?

There are checkboxes for the individual modules that you can uncheck if you don't have enough money for the whole rebuy but want to keep the hull.
I haven't seen a rebuy screen for several months so I'm not completely sure but I think the boxes are checked by default (i.e. the default is "rebuy all")

If you were "messing around with it" it's possible that you have unchecked them.

Dying is usually caused by a stressful situation directly before, so personally I think it's a good practice to take a breather before you do anything. Go get a glass of water, walk it out, visit a toilet, tell wife you love her. Then return to the computer and deal with the rebuy screen with a clear head. Otherwise you end up messing things up further.

I'm an expert on the rebuy screen.
The new one is better than the previous one but still isn't as clear as it could be.

One you've been there a couple of dozen times you'll understand it.

Never had any issue on rebuy, just accept the popup when you enter the screen and choose to rebuy your old ship. Assuming you had the CR to do a rebuy...
