The "British" Empire

From the games description The Empire is based upon ancient Rome, but come on, the game is made in Britain, so come on guys nail your colours to the mast - why not the British Empire?

Us Brits are always so scared of our own history, why is that?

Rome/Romans is often considered the 'greatest' empire there was, so if they base the story on Rome I can see the logic in that.

Besides, the Brits are famously understated and we're post-colonialism nowadays :)

Much more politically 'safe' to choose the Romans over the Brits

Historically (from Frontier - Elite 2) the Empire was always based on the Roman Empire, I don't think it's to do with post-colonial embarrassment, more that of continuity.

Because the British Empire didn't have a senate with individual senators controlling individual legions leading to periodic civil wars to control the empire

because everyone that was once in you empire kicked your butts? LOL

Brits arent the only ones scared of their own history. Political correctness makes a lot of people squeemish when it comes to the realities of history.

DB and myself have something in common. We are both members of the 'Most Excellent Order of the British Empire' - he as an Officer, I as a Member.

S'got nothing to do with OP. Just sayin'. ;-)

'Up the Empire!"

>That is not correct there are many Empires through out history greater than Rome and have done far more for the evolution of civilization than Rome has ever done.

You missed the part where I was talking subjectively, there isn't a correct answer.

For me though, they brought civilization to the continent that then colonised/industrialized the rest of the world.

I always assumed it was based on another Empire, but you can't say it because Lucus arts would sue.

The federation could also be based on Star truck, but it isn't because they would sue.

The alliance exists to make it very clear that you are not playing in a universe loosely based on star truck or any other such wars universe.

If you think about it the British empire still exists it has just been relabeled to USA + friends. Think about it, what countries speak English as their main language, share the culture, religious beliefs...

Language is the single biggest unifier in the world as far as I see it. Naturally people who can communicate, congregate. It was inevitable that USA + UK (+ Au + Canada etc...) would become closest of friends.

So in that way, really we are still ruling the world, well at least we have given the reins to our trained psychopathic overgrown offspring America.

Easy answer, the Empire in 'Elite' is not supposed to dominate quite so such.

That seems a bit hypocritical when you say the realities of history, and then say everyone once in the empire kicked our butts? Lets be realistic, most were given independence after WW2!

Also, notice the names of the Imperial interdictors. Dreadnought, Majestic, Elizabeth (Queen)... British capital ships all.

I beg to differ. Most of the civilised world speaks 'American' not 'British' English. We keep you guys around for good tea and an example of poor dental hygene! ;)
