The Buckyball Racing Club needs you!

You may have heard of the Buckyball Racing Club but in case you haven't, or in case you just don't really know what we do (or don't think it's for you) then I thought I'd just tell you a little bit about us and try to encourage you to give it a try.

Basically we're an Elite Dangerous rally racing group. We organise time-trial races that run over the course of anything from a couple of days to a couple of weeks (or indefinitely in the case of the Sagittarius A* challenge).

Unlike some other racing groups you don't need to be on-line at a certain time on a certain day to take part, you can run our races any time you want over the duration of the event and you can run them as many times as want (trying to shave precious seconds off your time).

The way these work is that there's a start-line (e.g. a station), a course (sometimes the exact route is given, sometimes planning your route is part of the fun), and a finish line (again, typically a station, often just back at the start line). There may be some rules about ship class and outfitting (e.g. Fuel Scoops might not be allowed or there might be a bonus for running without shields). When you're ready at the start-line you take a screenshot showing the time and then head off around the course, as fast as you can. At each point along the course you take another screenshot and you take a final screenshot when you land at the finish line.

You then submit your set of screenshots to the race organiser (either by email or a pm here on the forum) who maintains a leaderboard (typically updated at least daily) where you can see how you're doing compared to the other competitors. That's about it (there may be some additional rules and there's often an element of role-play/backstory to each race just to make things more interesting).

Most of our courses take between 30 minutes and an hour to run.

It's a LOT of fun, makes a really nice change from your usual ED gameplay, and can teach you more about the mechanics of this wonderful game than you might expect. We'd really welcome some new members (and I use the word "members" lightly, all you have to do is give it a try really) so if you're interested then the current race, entitled "Spring Break" can be found by clicking on the banner below, or alternatively you can just visit http://buckyballracing.org.uk for more info.

If you have any further questions then feel free to pm me here on the forum.

n.b. this particular race has some slightly more complex rules, don't let that put you off tho', it's still basically as described above.

Coming soon (2nd-10th April) ...

n.b. this event will require Horizons.

Taken from Turbo Hour - a race involving doing as many laps of the given circuit as possible within an hour.
You'll learn how to plot efficient routes and fly really fast!

Taken from Secret Scramble - a scramble race involving some last minute route planning.
And yes, sometimes we do SRV racing too!

Apart from the general fun and camaraderie when participating in the races, your skill as a navigator will increase when trying to optimise your route to shave off just one more jump.
Not to mention honing your reflexes to a fine edge, when having to swerve around that inconsiderate Imperial Clipper exiting the mailslot while you're boosting in.

If you thought Elite dangerous forums was all about ranting about how theres no content and what the hecks wrong with fdev and screaming look at me into the abyss... youd be mainly right, but... theres a special place you can go to, to just enjoy what we have, I cant promise there wont be pedantic nonsense there, but this place is called community events... a place for events created by the community... wow.
for along time it was only the domain of the angel rose group.. the BRC and people asking or complaining about community goals..(fdev created events ..not player events ) these days its mainly the BRC :( , we are a friendly bunch interested in racing our ships to their limits.. or not as the case may be.. for me it reinvigorated my love for elite.

We encourage everyone to host races.. so its not just the same guy or gal calling the shots.. we do have a group leader .. Drakhyr.. but hes really only there to tell us when we are being too silly and to organise the website ..bless him. recently we have started doing mid week madness short events.. that focus on short or experimental races. We try and be as inclusive as possible and try and remain neutral in the Galaxy. though our regular racers may belong to what ever weird faction they want.. we ask them to leave that behind while they are racing.

We recently introduced a set of icons to put on the banners that make it easy to tell whats going on in the race.. if you look at the spring break banner.. youll see its a BRC main event ( as appose to a MWM (mid week madness ) event) it uses stations so large ships can race ( as appose to outposts ) its a cargo based race.. and can take up to 60 minutes, these icons should tell you things like if its a horizons only event, or if buggys are used...etc.etc. the dates the races are on are always cleary marked.
We all hope you join us in smashing your minds out on the toast rack.

Someone should post up Furrycats short vid on Buckyballing here... ill dig out the link if it doesn't come up.

By far the most consistently entertaining threads on the forums and a sheer delight to fly with these chaps. As Stern Winter said the amount that you hone your flying skills makes a big difference to your every day flying, especially once you master Planetary Braking (I still have not fully mastered Planetary Braking), though I've only caught a planet in the face a couple of times...

Every race is a social event that also presents a new set of interesting challenges. But regardless of your reasons for racing, it is abundantly clear to me that racing makes us better pilots, which is useful no matter what else you do in Elite. Just think of your racing seasons as training exercises; there's a lot to learn when it comes to optimizing your Elite: Dangerous experience, and racing pushes most of the boundaries of your expertise as a pilot.

On a personal level, I enjoy talking about and solving puzzles more than winning; not to mention creating them. So my theme when it comes to BRC participation is:
To the tune of Jerry Was A Racecar Driver...

Jhyrryl was a race ship pilot;
And he flew so goddamned fast;
He never did win no checkered flag;
But he never did come in last.

Totally applies to me too! Haven't EVER won a Buckyball (although Spring Break Taxi is currently looking hopeful ... and I should NOT have said that out loud!).

You hear that new recruits? I've never won and I keep coming back for more. It's so not about the winning, it's not about the winning, it's not about the winning, it's not about the winning ... ** Alec walks off into the distance repeating this mantra **

Hehe, no I haven't won a single race since I started in Premium Beta, though I came close in the last Mid-week Madness race. Buckyball racing is also responsible for all of my deaths, except for 2 :D

Where are the PSBs?! :(
There are some at Wells Relay on Ao Kang 3A atm Fox2, we've also got a war on which as you know is standard for any buckyball.
we are just a pale shadow of Ez's greatness we understand... but if your ever up for a diluted version to get your fix. or hey .. if you ever wanted to host a race.. which you would be unable to do with the BBR , join us.
