Honouring the Special Effect campaign 10k Your Way, and hoping to raise some money for a worthy cause, Alec and I put our heads together on a very silly Thursday and came up with a plan for a race that touches on previous races, and certainly fits the 10k your way brief!
From 00:00 UTC on 11th July 3311 to 23:59 UTC on 21st July 3311, take part in 10k the buckyball way!
RACE GUIDELINES
- Start at Nye Terminal in Pareda
- Fly to and stop at the following planetary bases in any order
- Cataldo Tourist Hostel in Zi Yomi planet 10 K
- Waudby Dredging Territory in 14 Tau Ursae Majoris planet 10 K
- Onishi Heights in HIP 60953 planet 10 K
- At each base either land on the landing pad or no more than 150m away from the station waypoint if no landing pad is available for your ship size.
- Enter your SRV and, after highlighting the base, drive 3,333m away.
- Recall your ship once the distance to the waypoint says 3,333m.
- Fly back to Nye Terminal in Pareda.
CLASSES
There will be two classes for the race. Regulation Cobra Mk V and unlimited.
The Regulation Cobra Mk V build is here (note the downgrade of the powerplant to a 3D): https://s.orbis.zone/qZzE
As for Unlimited, any ship goes, providing you are able to purchase it for credits in game.
RULES
The following are NOT allowed:
- Synthesis of any kind (including repair and FSD injection)
- Pre super-charging the FSD (yes it's possible, no it's not allowed)
- Navlock (i.e. locking on to a team mate and dropping at their beacon is not allowed)
- Dying at any point between initial launch and final landing back at Nye Terminal
PRIZES
Thanks to the wonderful folks at Special Effect, we have prizes to give away!
The winner of each class will receive a Special Effect paint pack bundle, including paints for the Sidewinder, the Krait Mk II and the Anaconda, as pictured below (with thanks to CMDR Andrew Johnson) and a special effect exclamation point decal, not pictured.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!!
If your name is on the leader board at all, you will be entered into a prize draw for another Special Effect paint pack bundle! So even if your times aren't competitive, by entering both the Unlimited and Regulation runs you will have two chances to win!
SUBMITTING YOUR RUN
Once the race has started you will be able to click on the following link to submit your run via a google form.
You will be required to provide evidence. If you wish this can be in the form of a URL to a video of the entire run uploaded to YouTube but note that you MUST include timestamps for the key moments (see below) in the description of the video for it to be accepted. Alternatively you can supply the URL for an album of screenshots (typically on Imgur) of the key moments.
Should you wish to provide screenshots for ease of upload note that you can always video the run and then capture the screenshots from it afterwards.
The key moments you must capture are:
- Your ship outfitting (a series of screenshots capturing all the modules in your right hand panel is usually the easiest way to do this).
- A start line shot taken just BEFORE launch with your ship still on the pad, and the current time showing in the top-right of the HUD.
- A shot taken just after landing at each of the three stations either on the landing pad or clearly showing you are less than 150m from the station waypoint and the current time in the top-right of the HUD.
- A shot taken in your SRV with the station targeted and at least 3,333km away from your current position.
- A finish line screenshot taken just AFTER landing back at Nye Terminal.
10K YOUR WAY
Special Effect are asking you to set yourself a 10k challenge during July 2025 to help raise money to level the playing field for disabled gamers. It could be as simple as running or walking 10km or perhaps covering the distance on your favourite game or collecting 10,000 of a certain item. We want you to be as creative as possible!

FAQ
Can I race in a Scorpion?
Absolutely you can! It will likely be a lot slower but I have no problem whatsoever with you completing the race in a scorpion!
Can I submit the same run for both Regulation and Unlimited?
No, even if you choose a Cobra Mk V for the Unlimited run, you're probably best off giving it a smidge of engineering to get stuff done.
Is this the standard "Regulation" ship that will be used in all races going forwards?
In short - no, this is the regulation ship for this race only. I wanted you to have fun in the Cobra Mk V than having to deal with SCO in the old regulation cobra.
