Ah it's that time of the year, when betas are released, CMDRs are getting antsy, and a young pilot's fancy turns to Buckyballing.

Hell, I don't know what I'm talking about, either. All I do know is that we've done nine of these things so far and each one has been a bucket o' fun, and they're about the best cure for pre-release Beta blues that you can get short of, well, a live release.

So what is a Buckyball, you might ask?

Yeah, so what is a Buckyball?

I'm glad you asked. The Buckyball Run is a series of rally races through the spacelanes of Elite Dangerous. Starting back in the days of the 50LY bubble of the original Beta in 3300, racers have been tasked with getting from Here to There as quickly as possible. Buckyballs have ranged from short range scrambles to checkpoint races, to rally races across the bubble, and even to Sagittarius A* at the center of the galaxy. They tend to run for a week or so, give or take, allowing pilots to register times at their leisure. At the end of the week, the pilot with the top time is declared the winner.

Oh this is fair. What chance does my FDL have against an Anaconda or an Asp?

Oh, you're gonna get your ass kicked, pal. But that shouldn't stop you from running. Sure, the uber competitive types will run whatever stripped-down cockpit duct-taped to whatever FSD they can manage, but the Buckyball is about pushing your ship to the limit. How fast can you go in your ship. In the Buckyball A*, for example, we had pilots flying out to Sadge in Sidewinders, Orcas, FDL's, Vipers, all just to prove it could be done. Like that one famous dude said before climbing that really tall hill on Earth way back when, "Because it's there."

But also, cuz it's fun as hell. I mean seriously, it's like way fun. Would I lie to you? I mean, check these out. They're the threads for the last nine Buckyballs. Have a click and judge for yourself.

This all sounds vaguely familiar...

It should. This was all inspired by a 100% accurate documentary produced in the late 20th century about a real-life race event.

Yeah yeah yeah, got it. So what's this "Buckyball Racing Club" then?

Well, you see, actual Buckyball Runs only happen once every few months. But there's a group of pilots who felt like waiting around for Bucky to get off his haunches to organize a race was a huge waste of time that could be spent splattering their ships into docking bays throughout the galaxy. So they came up with the Buckyball Racing Club, organizing brand new events of all shapes and sizes. Where the Buckyball Run concentrates on space-borne rally racing, the BRC's events run the gamut of classic Buckyball Runs to runs with specific mission challenges, planetary landings and "Buggyball" Races across whatever planets grant them landing clearance. If you want to learn a thing or two about doing your thing only twice as fast, then take a peak at what the BRC has to offer. They've always got something going on.

Who's this Bucky guy, and why should he care if I click that link?

Hey, it's your life and you're in control. Bucky doesn't care one way or another. Though he really thinks you should click that link. You've come this far, what have you got to lose?

So what now? When do we start?

Well, this is just an announcement thread, to give Buckyballers who might be on their way back from across the galaxy notice to haul their cookies back to the bubble before mid-June to get their game faces on. The date is subject to change depending on when the Beta ends and 2.1/1.6 drops, but for now it looks like we can get in a week of racing before the big go-live. In the mean time, feel free to post in this thread and be clever. We like clever around these parts. It might even be fun.

You like fun, don't you?

See y'all mid-June. In the mean time, feel free to be clever. The pool is open.

p.s. anybody got a link to the BBR9 live run start from Garden Enterprise? The one where the Conda gets hung up on the rack at the end? I could watch that a million times. :D

p.p.s. Denton Patreus can suck it.

What if we don't know how to be clever?

Jhyrryl, this isn't your first rodeo. I know you know how to be clever. I've seen you be clever. In fact, you posting that question and how it was done is clever in of itself.

Check and mate!

A very nice announcement, but you had me at "" already. [yesnod]

I don't know of anyone who can turn down a good . Glad to have you back for another BBR!

After looking for "" in the urban dictionary. Count with me. (Can I bring my Disconda?) [up]

Your Disconda is welcome! But now that you've broached the subject, I think it's important to clear up any misconceptions that this "Urban Dictionary" as you called it might have given you. While UD does have an entry for "," it is in no way, shape or form related to its usage in the 34th century or in Buckyball Run 10.

Since it's important to learn something new every day, gather 'round Buckyballers, and let me drop some science on you.

THE BUCKYBALL RUN PRESENTS: A Brief History of the

The "Fust" is a small, furry mammal-like animal hailing from one of the twin earth-like worlds of VZ Corvi. There are two related but separate species of Fusts, the land-dwelling "Lousy Fust" (as it is prone to lice infestation) and the winged "Flying Fust," which through an amazing instance of convergent evolution are identical to the Sugar Glider of Earth, other than a pair of bright green antennae growing from their foreheads. (See figure 1.)

SPcSlkV.png

Now the Flying Fust is a social creature which lives in polygonal nests which hang suspended from tree branches, with a single slot-like opening in the bottom. As Flying Fusts are generally nocturnal, they use echolocation when flying to navigate, generating a "clucking" sound as they swoop through the night air. During a swarm, many Fusts will enter and leave the colony at the same time to search for food, but thanks to razor sharp reflexes and expert use of echolocation, collisions are rare. When swarming, the air near the colony is filled with the delightful sounds of hundreds of Fusts clucking, a sound inhabitants of VZ Corvi enjoy on many a warm summer's evening, a natural symphony and aerobatic ballet which they refer to lovingly as a "."

As cute as they are, the Fusts are an endangered species, and under no circumstance should you ever suggest someone take a Flying Fust. However, it is customary for the inhabitants of the planet to offer them as gifts, and it is considered the greatest of honors when a citizen of VZ Corvi gives a Flying Fust. Also note that the wingless "Lousy Fust" has a reputation for using its own echolocation sounds to interfere with the Flying Fust's navigation to cause them to crash and steal their food, so if referred to as a "Lousy Fust" by any inhabitant of VZ Corvi, you can be pretty sure they are insulting you.

So, when visiting VZ Corvi during Buckyball 10, be sure to think about our little furry, flying friends on the planet surface and emulate their socially conscious behavior in the slot of Malcom Ring as we engage in a space-borne tribute to the Flying Fust and their joyous Fusterclucks!

That my friend is a truly amazing post! Cannot wait for Buckyball 10, should be just as my Midweek Madness event finishes, which couldn't be more different :)

[...]

Thank you for the thorough explanation, I've always been interested in nature and its many wonders. I decided to further document myself on these curious little creatures: judging from accurate studies, their swarms appear to be arranged in a strictly hierarchical, matriarcal organization, with the elder female specimens being in charge of taking decisions and procreating for the entire swarms, thus generating always new Fusts (Lousy as well as Flying) to deal with. These "Old Mother-Fuster" seem to originate more commonly from the "Lousy Fust" branch, and because of their social status they are usually observed to be the ones first leading their swarms in and out of their nests, thus originating the above mentioned phenomenon. As such, by now is general knowledge that when a happens, usually it is because of some Mother-Fuster that started it in the beginning.

This race hasn't even started and already is entertaining, in all the wrong ways. [noob]

In the mean time, feel free to be clever. The pool is open.

It's funny you should say that since the only reason I'm reading this is because the pool is most certainly NOT open. Which is why I'm sat in the lobby of the Nottingham Hilton with a pair of swimming trunks and an iPad, gazing longingly at the breakfast buffet and wondering if I should just abandon the idea of a pre breakfast swim altogether.

P.S. count me in.

I'd like to be involved, now I've tried the Kessel Run I've got the racing bug

C'mon in, plenty of room! When the time comes, all you gotta do is put up a time on the board that's slower than mine and everything will be just peachy!

Of course most people seem to ignore that second part about the slower time for some reason. Buncha ingrates! :p

Dammnnnnn

Didn't get first post :(

Ok I'm in. I'll break out ED from my backup HDD and reinstall for this :D

Ha! You're slipping, dude! But it wouldn't be a Buckyball without ya... Of course, the ONE sole area where I blow everybody else out of the water in the BBR is my extensive collection of dots on the board. If it weren't for you, I'd be the sole winner with 10.

As for pulling the ol' ED install out, you should hang onto it for a little bit. I'm finding the 1.6/2.1 upgrade to be quite a breath of fresh air.

In other news, I found the video I was looking for, of the epic start to BBR9's live run! CMDR Reload, wherever you are, Bucky salutes you!

Just over a week to go. I should probably kick up the thread up in general discussion at some point. The big question remains... when will Engineers officially land...?

Woohoo! Great to have you back :D

:) Thanks man... at this moment I'm in the X Universe, re-playing X3TC... and finding that (for the first time) I'm wishing some parts of ED could be like X3TC... :( ED with X3 trading mechanism would be awesome.

You may get your wish this time boss! I'm gonna fly in my new favourite - Cobra MK 4 Peggy Sue :) It's slower than a MK3, shorter jump range too. EDIT - I named her Peggy Sue cuz the MK4 feels like a crippled MK 3, like a limping ship.... and that made me think of pirates and peg legs, and then this song popped into my head :)

But I still have my old racing Cobra MK 3 back in Sol somewhere... I forgot where I parked her.

Well for some reason I am not privvy to the beta for 2.1, so no diff to me. I thought my lifetime pass would have given me that access but apparently not.

In any case... I need to login before 2.1 hits to find out where I last parked. For all I know I could have parked 10,000 LY out of the bubble....
