The Buckyball Run 3 - It's not what you got, it's how you use it...

What is a buckeyball?

Well, to answer literally:

"Buckminsterfullerene (or buckyball) is a spherical fullerene molecule with the formula C60. It has a cage-like fused-ring structure (truncated icosahedron) which resembles a soccer ball, made of twenty hexagons and twelve pentagons, with a carbon atom at each vertex of each polygon and a bond along each polygon edge."

But in these here parts, a "Buckyball" is an event where a bunch of pilots in a bunch of ships try to get from point A to point Z as quickly as possible, preferably in one piece in front of the ships behind them.

Not everyone succeeds, but that's what insurance is for.

In other words, the Buckyball Run is a race. And everyone's invited. Stick around. There's another starting in the near future. And have a look at the previous leaderboards, filled with names that have become legends throughout this entire message thread.

You, too, could become a legend in your own mind.

I hardly can read and obeying rules never was my strength.

Probably why you won the last run. You're an inspiration to all of us, Mutant! ;)

Sorry been out of touch with ED for abit... busy trying to clear my backlog of games (some of which were purchased in Steam Summer Sale 2011) before ED goes "live" and I won't be playing anything else anymore...

In any case, yeah since people have tested your email thing I won't bother... I'll just do the actual run when BBR4 comes around.

BTW, Z... you need to work on your marketing skills... you left out the "booze" and the "Purple Space Babes" parts when telling prospective new racers about the Buckyball Runs :p

I'm into this too :p For the moment, I'm on Crysis 2...

I want Buckyball Anniversary Run NOW!
Or at least more infos about BbR 4

Got it mapped out, got the registration bot ready to go... Tentative plan is to start this weekend, but two things stand in the way.

1. Performance is still all over the board. I've hit launch and had to wait 4-5 minutes to take off. Entering/exiting SC is also spotty, and I'm not the only one. I was really hoping 1.05/1.06 was going to help with that, but if anything it's made it worse. I'd really like to have a more level playing field especially since pilots will only get one shot at this run.

2. The BIG EVENT is this weekend! Who knows what that really means in the game, but it could alter the race. Another patch? Changes to ship stats? New ships? A bursting of the Beta Bubble? Braben only knows...

So... we're in wait mode for at least another day or two. But if you or anybody else is really chomping at the bit, feel free to take a stab at one of the earlier BBR's. I'll still record the time, it just won't be an O-fficial race result. You'll still get the complimentary bumper sticker, though. Collect them all!

Well, seeing as Beta 2 is launching 30th Sept, it'll be just nice if you launch BBR4 this Sunday and it ends next Sunday... 2 full days before Beta 2 on 30 Sept:)

Plus, once it goes live I'm headed for the Sol system to visit good ole Mother Earth... 100 light years bubble, 500 systems... *drool*

Gonna be busy explorin'~!

ps: Might have to upgrade to an Asp explorer ship ... hmmm

Just now read up on all the goodies coming out in Beta 2. Racing will probably take a back seat for a while, though I can see potential for future Buckyball Runs as well... Moddable ships will definitely change the flavor of things, not to mention the tremendous number of possible routes and checkpoints available. I didn't see it listed, but if they include the automated pilot's log that's been mentioned before, say goodbye to taking screenshots of the gal map.

Of course, the newly implemented reputation could also factor in if a pilot isn't particularly popular at one of the checkpoints or the finish line...

And, what's all that extra space worth if we don't use it? Hopefully everybody can gather up at some point for a nice little 100 Light Year Dash. ;)

There's an awful lot to look forward to and I know we're all gonna be busy stretching our wings come the 30th. We'll definitely have to get in another quick run before the big day...

Perhaps make best of 3 to improve chances for everyune to have a run without connection issues?

I will give the old routes a try to celebrate the anniversary!

I wonder if Lave, Leesti, Diso, Riedquat etc will all be in the 100 light-year bubble... I would love to make a video launching from Lave and doing a Lave-Leesti trade run like the original Elite....

I know a friend of mine would love it... he's too busy being a family man to be playing games now but I bet he'll get a kick out of the video...

How about BBR5 being the "Nostalgia Run"? Lave-> Leesti-> Diso-> Riedquat-> Zaonce etc in the fastest time? :D
