I was watching the live stream during the release of the Engineers update, and I believe it was Michael Brookes who was asked: Do you plan on allowing the naming of ships. His response was essentially: Someday, yes, maybe, but waaay down the line.
I thought - why would that be such a low priority? In terms of immersion, it would have great bang for the buck. As I've been playing the game, I've been thinking more and more about it, and decided to post - for whatever difference, if any, it makes.
In terms of roleplay (which a lot of development seems to be geared towards), ships throughout history have had names. In science fiction, space ships almost always have names. Is it too much to ask for those of us who are immersed in our travels with our ships to be able to name them as well? We spend all of our time in them. We see a ship we really want, and save up to buy it. And then save up even more to kit them out how we want. We have a lot of time invested in them, and a lot of satisfaction in configuring them and making them work for us. The more time we spend in them, the more we develop a sort of immersive relationship with them.
Even for those who have no interest in roleplay, sometimes we might have two of the same ship which serve different purposes. Aside from the different loadout, it would would be nice to be able to name them something which highlights their purpose.
Really, it's something that just about everyone would appreciate. To say that ship naming is so low on the priority list, I think, really ignores a big and I think important opportunity for CMDRs to feel connected to what they see on their screen.
Please reconsider where this is on the priority list. Let us name our ships.
A livery option for the name to appears on the outside of the ship somewhere would be great. A livery option for a plate (or something similar) with the ship name visible on the helm as we play would be even better (IMO). But if all of that is too much to ask for, then the ship name in stats or in stored ships would be a great start.
Thanks for listening!
