The Cobra Mk III is 200 years old?

The Cobra MkIII is a classic all purpose ship found throughout human space. The model was first built in Lave Cowell & MgRath shipyard in Lave in 3100. Despite its age it remains a popular ship for lone pilots who value its balance of carrying capacity and ability in combat.

If this is your best multi-role craft then there's not much hope, we laugh at your inferior Federation technology.

Hail the Emporer - Bask in his Greatness!

wait if the cobra is that old what idiot thought to himself

why don't i make a much smaller, worse version of this two hundred year old ship and call it the sidewinder

Pssst! I heard in the Federation they eat toxic waste and live in mud huts. Obviously things are not that great for those poor sods hence 200 years old ships. On the other hand I heard that Imperials are decadent people that indulge in all sorts of awfull stuff. Your shiny and advanced ships propelled by slaves, arent they?

That part always reminds me of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-52_Stratofortress

(The B-52) has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite the advent of later, more advanced aircraft (..). The B-52 completed fifty years of continuous service with its original operator in 2005; after being upgraded between 2013 and 2015, it is expected to serve into the 2040s.

Well - spaceship development cycles seem to take rather long in the ED universe - and Hengist Duval "only" being 118 indicates that time seems to tick a little different in the ED universe.

On a side note, it's 3300, the SideWinder is 300 years old, the cobra is only 130 years older. The Viper is almost 550 years old...
[edit] - ah - that's the cobra Mk 1 - the Mk III was built in 3100 as the OP states - however the Mk III is 118 years after the Sidewinder.

Mx5 is a fab little roadster.

Nothing against the Mx5 - nothing against the Sidewinder either - it's a fab little roadster. Given the choice, I'd prefer the E Type, though ;).

550 years old... you would have thought somebody in the entire galaxy would have invented new ships to replace the viper in 550 years

as far as i'm concerned these are pretty big plotholes, it's not like they're warhammer and technology was lost

Maybe the AIs had a lot to do with ship development and when they were banned from civilised space ship development suffered accordingly....?

Windmill has existed in Europe for more than 600 years. People have just upgraded them slightly. Why are there no hypermills yet?

I also think that science is pretty stagnated in the ED universe, thsu the slow progress. Most new ships are also use only slightly improved technology compared to their predecessors

This is untrue, my slaves are only used on the rare occasions where I have a problem with my main drive. I "encourage" them to get out and push...

...sometimes I even lend them spacesuits...;)

I think it is the hull designs haven't advanced as all the focus is on the internals.
If the Hull work, can be mass produced, and the machinery for their repair and maintenance is universal, why change them.
After all the FSD have been invented only recently, so things to go in the hull seems to be the focus rather than the hulls.
Any new upstart companies producing new ones would likely be crushed by the interstellar giants

Very good point - market penetration for a new ship hull type would be hampered by the lack of places possessing the equipment, major structural components and skills to repair it.

And as an aside, the Soyuz is still going strong after how many years? Compared to 118 years for the Cobra MkIII designed and built by a Advanced spacefaring society
I imagine for the same reasons, tired, perfected, they know how to use it, and have a good manufacture infrastructure in place etc. etc.

Strictly speaking original the 3100 version IS known as the Mk III.

The Mk I came into service 2885AD.

The Mk II never reached production due to design flaws.
