All beautiful pics... you guys ought to have a go modding glffe's console...

Thanks :) LOL I think I'd prefer to spend my time on something new, altho it would be very cool to see the FFE console in all it's 3d rendered glory. I love seeing re-engineered 'old school' games, which is why oolite swallowed up a bunch of my time :)

I'm kind of stumped with it now... not too sure where to go.
I'm thinking maybe have a menu system that when you select on of the options from the Nav Wheel, it opens a floating 'sub menu' that contains the current variables selected, so for example, the planetary system one will contain info about the system you are in, size, population, distance etc...

Will try that and see what it looks like...

landing on a planet near a galaxy?

im not sure that a planet can exist in a way that you see in that picture. Otherwise its a very nice picture.

:)

LOL - wasn't going to say anything :)

I've been wondering if anyone is actually interested in this little project or if anyone has any comments or suggestions?

I think Elite IV is going to be a leap beyong the current generation of space sims. I believe it will be the first to fully integrate FPS style gameplay with starship command gameplay. You'll be able to walk (or perhaps float if theres no artificial gravity) from the cabin of your Cobra MkIII into its cockpit, you'll be able to see through the view screen and see the instrumentation, correctly displayed, as you walk around the command chair.

When you sit inside the chair, the view screen will fill your forward view, but you'll still be able to look around inside your cabin. While sat in the command chair a device will project important ship data direct to your retina. The HUD projected on to your retina will be totally configurable.

I imagine the cockpit of a Cobra to be pretty "low tech" and grungy, like the cockpit of Serenity in Firefly, or of Starbug in Red Dwarf :) A nice touch would be monitors mounted on moveable arms that you could adjust in FPS mode.

I also think its at least 5 years away still!

Optimistic then?

I think more *realistic*. David has said that the game won't be released until computer hardware is at the level when his vision can be fulfilled. From certain clues he's given us, like The Outsider, I feel I have an inkling of the game he wants to create. I think hardware in five to six years time will be just about powerful enough to host it.

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised though.

And you think that is 5 years away? What's it going to need, a super computer? I think you may be underestimating the potential for DX10 and new VGA Cards. Have you checked out the demo for Alan Wake? Simply stunning.

Nice layout.

I like the way they done it in X-wing: Alliance every ship have there own virtual cockpit in 3d, but the same 2d layout of the ships HUD and radar. I hate the X-wing radar though, elite style is much better and easier to use.

yeah - was just thinking about Elite the other day there and was thinking that a 3d virtual cockpit in Elite 4 would be pretty cool.

Real nice image ('Landing on planet near galaxy') posted by AtomicHedmash there as well by the way. Not sure - but I think it probably would be possible for a planet to exist, orbiting a star at a location like that. The image looks like the photo was taken at night or twilight, with the planet's star below the horizon.
