The Codex

Oddly enough, the codex is one of my most highly anticipated features in the upcoming year. I think it will be low-key the biggest game changer in how players get invested and engaged in the game. Or at least it can be.

I hope it is fleshed out enough that we can collect data from several facets of the game, not just exploration.

How great would it be to have a place where we can collect and organize our trade data and market changes. Or a place where we can look up players and characters who we've interacted with and get a dossier. Or a place to collect local legal information like jurisdiction features and your past in allied or hostile system. As well as a list of the different threads and breadcrumbs of the mysteries and lore element we stumble across--even small stuff like where we found our biggest painite drop or highest profits. Basically one place that kind of acts as the hub for the things that define us as individual characters. I think it could be a boon for the general feeling of player agency, especially if it has a dynamic and expressive UI that prompts its use.

If this is as expansive as it could be, I can image us spending a lot of time diving in, on our way to various waypoints and destinations, so one QoL feature I would ask FDev to look at is a kind of programmable alert/alarm. Let us set up a condition-based alert for proximity to various targets and waypoints, so we can actually use some of our idle SC flight time productively, and without fear of overshooting waypoints or missing important new contacts while buried in the codex.

Even if it isn't a big game changer, the main thing is it'll be there. They can always improve on it later.

But yes, I'm looking forward to that, too. Alongside the voiced galnet to listen to while exploring, they are the changes that won't make the headlines but will make the game a hell of a lot more enjoyable.

From what little has been said, I am expecting a big list of progress bars, and check boxes.

I mean... I freegin hope not, but hey.

My fear is that it's going to be just a way of keeping all those tourist beacon messages. I hope that it isn't, but with FD's track record of producing MVP features...

Which is why I wanted to bring it up. The more ideas they have for implementation, the better. Because it could be that "one" feature that really improves the game holistically, across almost every player profile.

So many of the suggestion and complaint threads focus on niche issues that only affect insular groups of players. Not that those issues aren't important, but I also rarely see opportunities as great as this that could fix a lot of things for everyone at once.

Accessibility and legibility of information is what I consider to be one of ED's largest weaknesses (across the board), and the codex could seriously upend that.
