The Commanders Awards for 2018: Your Ship of the Year

For me, its probably the Krait MKII. She looks great and can do pretty much anything with style. Plus she has soul, unlike that Python thingy :p. I brought 2 while in Colonia, one for trading and one for exploration with a 58Ly range.

The Chieftain comes a close second for sheer looks and agility. The Challenger is a worthy upgrade, yet another winner from Lakon and you know what? The T7 is underrated, and makes for a better passenger ship then the Beluga.

Feel free to nominate Chapter 4 ships when they leave space dock but for me, the Krait MKII is this Commander's Ship of the Year.

Similarly I nominate the K-MkII and the aChief. But, in reverse order. The Alliance Chieftain is a masterpiece. I consider myself a combat focused pilot with an interest in any medium sized ship. Having flown everything in that range that can fight, nothing has been able to shift me out of my moderately engineered aChief. Not even the coming Mamba has a chance to supplant my aChief.

The K-MkII is a close second as my almost favorite ship. It has the ability to actually get me to fly those larger fetch/deliver missions. The Python was never something that encouraged me to bring it out unless some issue forced me to haul. Even with the consolation that the Python would certainly out carry anything to a medium pad, I just opted to go BH instead. I use the K-MkII the exact same way I used the Python, for hauling. The only difference is now I am happy, even pleased, to climb out of the shipyard in my Krait.

This is more emotional with the latest shiny ship given how the players will use it. Motor Trend will decide the best car of the year but there is a common denominator per how people will drive them in a few categories. This goes out the window with Elite Dangerous players who can use any ship a dozen different ways. Motor Trend couldn't keep up.

So pick emotionally what one likes for the moment. I'm flying my Krait Mk II around to Guardian sites. My Cutter makes millions transporting passengers. My Python makes millions transporting cargo. Note a Type-7 has abilities equaling a Python without the cost. My FAS and a Gunship installing Guardian fighters can deal with the Thargoids. My Corvette and PvP engineered Fer de Lance takes care of combat. Just a limited view of how one plays the game. So many others do their thing.

So vote your heart for the moment. It's OK. Add the right paint job to the Krait and I also smile a lot.

Regards

More than three decades ago, in Car And Driver, Gordon Baxter wrote an expose on how Motor Trend sold that award to the highest bidder...

Krait.

Shieldless, hull-tank, engineered, frag-Krait.

For a bruising brawling close up fighting style.

Re-rig with AX-mulltis and a xeno scanner to kick the Thargoids out of Alliance systems.

Able to survive PvP and even kill overconfident Hudson CMDRs.

Reaver skin and spikes so that this is the last thing you see as I ram it up your Asp or into a Baslisk cloaca.

Love it.

I was looking for that independent group that gives trophies and the car companies promote them in their commercials but couldn't remember them.

OK, J.D. Power and Associates. Anyone paying them off?

I love large fixed frags and up close and personal. We may think alike...

For me - as in this is highly subjective:

- best new ship of 2018
Krait Mk II. A really good allrounder, enjoyable to fly and looking good. The new Cobra MkIII in the new era of "medium ships rule"-FDev and just like the Cobra the Krait is a bit on the boring side, but reliable and very rational to fly.

- most fun ship I purchased 2018:
T-7
With the recent changes and having way to much money I gave the T-7 (I used to refer to as "flying coffin") a second chance and decided to fly it as "god" intended the T-7 to be flown: Shieldless and with the cheapest modules able to get that thing out of the dock and make a jump.
Turns out that the T-7 has really smooth SC handling, flying shieldless in a "deathtrap" adds to the fun and excitement of flying a spaceship and it is dirty cheap. Sadly the fun is limited by the size of the T-7, requiring it to land on large pads.

- most versatile ship 2018
Federal Dropship
Somehow I always end up in a FDS. I have 4 of those ships and use them for everything when I can't decide what ship to use for something. As a result I have an exploration FDS, a mission runner FDS, a passenger FDS (aka "long range courier") and a cold running FDS and the only reason why I don't have more FDS is that in the end the main difference between those ships are the optional modules.

- best ship for collecting dust in 2018:
Federal Gunship
The last years this prestigious trophy always went to my Cobra MkIII. This year the FGS won that price. I bought one with the intention to build a gunboat with SLF. I never even flew that thing. Why fly a Gunship if I can fly a FDS? And who needs a SLF? Did I mention that the FDS is cool and really cheap?
