Yeah, why not.

I'm not sure how often, if ever, I'd use it, but if others want it, I've no problem with it being in the game.

I'm kinda shocked at all the negative replies to this idea that obviously either didn't comprehend the original post or just failed to read it all together and just read the headline. This is not a suggestion for a magic do everything button and wake me up when we get there feature.

Such things don't shock me any more.
Never mind the dullards! [squeeeee]

I love when you realize that some people actually still can read full sentences :) thank you
And yes, you're 100% correct in your assumption regarding the suggestion and intent of the @OP, it's from the DDF = Frontiers own idea.

I am looking forward having a holografic menu on my forehand, anywhere i am having similar info as on my ships left hand pannel...

For example while inside my ship, the commands menu might look in a way to allow following story / usecase...

Navigator: plot route to <named tag from galaxy map>, scoopable every <number>. jump
Response: Aye captain, i`m on it!
.
.
INTERCOM: Navigator to captain, route has been ploted, we will make it with a full tank at the last star.

Pilot: take over

Pilot: take us to the route destination
response: Aye captain, initiating hyper drive!

Pilot: Try to evade interdictions for me!
Pilot: If you fail the interdiction (which is most likely going to happen :p ) go into <RUN AWAY!!!! | DEFENSE | AGGRESIVE | WAIT > mode
response: Don`t worry captain, ship will be safe with me.
.
.
.
.
I took the nearest elevator to the deck 5, had a quick look on the shiny weapons we were smuggling, looked over the hangar bay with the fighters and polished the front "windshield" of my beloved imperial fighter.
I played around with some paint and sprayed a - not very nice looking, but for me perfect - name of my reallife hometown. I smiled inside my VR helmet

INTERCOM: Pilot to captain, enemy interdiction iminent! It`s a python sir!

As I was just standing by my favourite killing machine, I said to myself: well why not, fun has found us! And I jumped inside the cocpit.

Pilot: submit interdiction
response: Aye sir!

And then it came... Wild spin sent everything, that was not attached to the hull, flying around the hangar bay like crazy :-D

I lauched in my fighter when the ship was still spinning, targeting the python right away... I shot the full capacitor of fastlaser salvo into the pythons shield, almost half of its shieldring disappeared...

Pilot: evade to safe distance
response: Yes sir!

I took a quick turn and looked up on the pythons hardpoints, suddenly pointing in my direction. A beam of energy melted my shields instantly and I boosted.....

Pilot: I am in trouble, need assistance.
response: Targeting greatest threat!
response: Engaging!

I was 2,9 km away from the python and my shield was quickly recharging... WHEN I SAW ANOTHER SHIPS EMERGING FROM THE HYPERSPACE... Cant be cops, they are slow like snails, it must be other pirates!

if you ask me, the flying in elite is the most fun. it's the integral part of the game. taking it away through an auto pilot goes beyond my comprehension.

that said, there are areas in the game that need travel improvements:

- extremely long in system trips. fix? increase max speed.
- allow in system hyperjumps if multiple stars are in the system.
- gravity wells slow you down too much and it takes too long for your ship to accelerate while you try to escape a planet's gravity well.

i said it time and time again. the acceleration and deceleration rates need to be improved so you don't move at the pace of a snail. players spend a lot of time traveling and sometimes traveling around feels rather slow. this can be improved while no destroying realism. talking abour realism though: instant ship transfers?!

Yes, i agree. The actual flying is fun. The hyperspace traveling 10, 20, 30 jumps is not fun. It is incredibly repetitive and boring. This is what the OP is talking about with the autopilot.
Read and try to comprehend the idea he is presenting. He is in no way trying to get rid of the actual flying part of the game with his idea.

Point ship press J
It's not great.
Add an AP (that can only use systems you've already explored).

Actually the first idea Frontier had was that only systems scanned by players could be viewed in the galaxy map, so if that is implemented I'm good with that, noooo problem.

Stop being so logical, we don't do that around here, didn't you get the "instant" memo?

An implementation like Frontier Elite's version would be interesting, with both its features AND its consequences. Would want to test it in beta before aye or nay, though. A poor implementation (scowls sidelong and spits at transfers) could be as horrible as a Trump/Clinton centerfold. Mindbleach on aisle 42, marked up for the occasion :)
