The conflicted mercenary - reflections on the outcome of Kui Hsein

Long have I questioned the morality of Senator Patreus's loan sharking. It is getting out of hand. Enslaving entire systems will only galvanize public opinion against the Empire. And I wonder how the Princess Aisling will respond to this, seeing as how there are suspicions that Patreus is courting her.

+Rep for you!. This is exactly what I want to read about. With so many concurrent stories flying a round, I want to hear the nitty gritty stuff so easily missed in Galnet news.

Given the actions of Senators Patreus and Torvalds in recent months, there shold be certain economic signals. So many systems have fallen to Patreus and so many slaves converted to Imperial slaves by Torvald that price of Imperial slaves should have fallen dramatically. The fact that the price hasn't fallen suggests that demand still outstrips supply. This suggests that Imperial slavery is unsustainable from within the Empire. Without a constant infusion of new blood from outside the price would rise beyond the means of most citizens. Then what happens? Either the Empire is forced into a wave of expansionism with the increased risk of conflict or Imperial citizens will be forced to look for alternatives like automation enjoyed in the Federation. Change is coming

Thanks for the +rep and glad to hear you're enjoying it. The next instalment will be suggesting a stronger link with other threads that are currently in GalNet.

The news channels are so very full of gossip these days aren't they? The Senator is very clearly establishing control, consolidating his base of power, and fortifying systems both militarily and economically by adding a tech advantage to his home system.

Certainly he's the poster child for Powerplay and these stories in GalNet at the moment are feeding that

You need people, faithful supporters, to build a powerbase. Patreus is going to lose that if he enslaves all of these people.

Remember the 1.2 million slaves that Aisling and her supporters released? Over 900,000 pledged support for her, most of them, life service.

In the long run, the course Torval and Patreus is on is highly unsustainable.

Which goes a long way towards explaining why Patreus got rid of the slaves at the earliest opportunity, letting others deal with the consequences. However it still falls a long way from the "sanitised" view of the Empire's slaves being those citizens fallen on hard times and choosing to work their way out of it.

That was always nothing but a myth, a pleasing lie we told ourselves to draw attention away from the horror that is slavery.

And trust me, those poor people will remember the name Patreus. They'll curse it every day of their lives.
