General / Off-Topic The creators of "Game of Thrones" will make "Star Wars"

I guess Disney is panicking? They paid a large sum for SW and so far they have not been critically the smash hits they were looking for, decent box office stuff, but not the run-away train of merchandising ker-ching they were aiming for. And certainly 100% divisive within the Star Wars community.

I got my kid an A-wing toy as it was on 80% discount, certainly would not have paid asking price for it, and certainly not bought any 'darkside' stuff that seems to be 80% of the child's toy line up for these cycle of films.

So they want to double-down on the darkside thread and introduce what, sex and ultra bloody violence to SW with these new writers? Is that really what was great about the original trilogy, or what SW even needs?

Like Jenner, i'm 100% done with SW, it's a dead horse and can't be saved. Just preserve the original trilogy in your hearts and DVD collections (you can buy one series of DVD releases that include the actual original films, before the remake 'Han shoots after Greedo' gubbins). SW was those original trilogy films. Nothing more. Especially not now.

Why hire them now?

All the male characters are already dead and all the females are already Mary Sues.

Current star wars is just a less edgy GoT.

Edit: Don't tell me there is still Poe and Fin. Those characters also died in the last one.

no.
it will be a completely different story.
another time... another place...

but i agree with everybody here, i have not great hopes..
Star Wars was the original trilogy, it never been a "brand" (except for merchandising maybe ?)
Disney is getting stuck in a serious trouble if they insist with this.

They should get me to make them.

The problem you (or I, or anyone!) face(s) is that everything that came after the original film trilogy still exists. It's just dead (as a franchise), and setting aside time to grieve on the fact is important for all fans of the originals.

You'd be better off making a complete new different series of sci-fi films to be honest. Then you just face the near impossible problem of modern day concerns not destroying your effort in the process, chances are you simply would end up with a sci-fi series just like the New Star Wars bile or New Star Trek vomit.

The only real way a true Star Wars(Star Trek) successor series could come about is if a real fan that won a bunch of jack pot lotteries decided to make one, imho. TV/Film production in the modern era is 90% of the reason why we get junk after junk.

Either build one, or buy I guess but there are whole leagues of duellists out there. Brill.

For me movies are always products of their age and we're just in a new one now. If the weight of the Skywalker saga really is beyond fans accepting, the Old Republic could be fertile ground but I was eight years old in 1977, so the originals were totally in my lunchtime. I don't dislike the new movies though (even rare in liking the prequels for their art-deco aesthetic) but there never was anything 'indie' about them. Aside from A New Hope, BEFORE it was released, maybe but the first lunchboxes arrived at exactly the same time, so popcorn.

That's the thing for me, the initial few series of GoT are REALLY good and handle the books well with only a few minor omissions and you can tell Martin's got his hand well and truly involved in them.

Slowly though, you see his withdrawl from the project with the that was their handling of the Dorne plotlines;

Followed shortly by the sudden complete character change of Stannis 'the Mannis' Baratheon:

The final nail in the coffin for me was how much they completely ignored the Greyjoy plot lines. Seriously, how do you make Cthulu worshiping Vikings uninteresting?

They're not great storywriters, which is what they've been signed onto this project for. Benioff, in terms of writing gave us the travesty that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Weiss has written nothing apart from Thrones and one episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia which he co-wrote with Benioff, and was a pretty weak episode. Oh and of course, their upcoming Man in the High Castle clone, Confederate.

I have no idea why the mainstream is getting so hyped about this. I mean, it was bad enough they agreed to let Rian Johnson direct Last Jedi. Seriously, for me, as enjoyable as a standalone film it was for the target market, he came close to killing the franchise due to being allowed to disregard/mess with all the new stuff and mysteries JJ Abrams, for all the issues he brought, was at least trying to seed into the new trilogy. But letting him direct a whole trilogy as well?

Don't forget the FTL drives everybody have in the last season.

Holy , we are surrounded by zombies beyond the wall, gotta fetch Daenerys on the other end of the continent, BRB.

I guess Disney is panicking?

I disagree.

Disney knew when they bought Lucas out they were buying a franchise and merchandising stream that was a license to print money.

Now they are just milking that cash cow.... I was concerned that this over-production of the franchise would occur in Disney's hands.

You can't kill what's already dead.

Just because it still moves, doesn't mean it's alive.

Like beating a dead horse.
I expect after this we'll get the 'reboot' or as 'Mickey the Rat' crew might call it, a 're-imagining' of the original trilogy.
Nothing stinks like a rotting animal, especially a large one.

Two things.

Firstly, they haven't created anything in Game of Thrones beyond adapting GRRM's work.

Secondly, considering how badly they've trodden over the source material there, I don't know how keen I am of the idea of them messing with another franchise I like.

On the other hand, you can ask, how much worse can it be than it is now?

EDIT: Wait, new Dune film? Oh boy, that's going to be a disaster... hope not, but.....

I'm so through with Star Wars. I'm even past the point where I like to just go watch them for the spectacle and then never see them again.

What else is new? We apparently lost all creativity years ago and regurgitation of popular franchises is about all we have.

Man, some folks are even messing with the Lion King. You don't do that guys. You just don't do that.

I'll tell JJ Abrams you said that.... because that guy has never had one original idea in any movie or TV show he has been involved in creating.

You are so right about the Hollywood reboot marketing mentality.
