Long story short, the FDL is my favourite in-game design, so I bought one as soon as I could afford it. Fortunately, it was way after the Engineers hit, so I was able to set my exploration build using lvl5 FSD upgrade allowing a respectable 24.5 ly jumprange. The rest of the limitations didn't bother me too much, I was able to fit shield, scanners and and an SRV - all the essentials. Andit turned out to be an excellent exploration ship!
I'm not great at storytelling, and many of the below shown images have been posted here and there, but I hope you'll find the post interesting enough. And apologies for the differing image sizes, I might do a post optimization.
Anyway, IIRC it was mid-October, shortly before 2.2 hit, when I left Colonia into the unknown. Image taken before departure, I was in the midst of the optimization.
The landing on the Mighty, the 9.9g record holder. Altough I went in as gentle as possible, I still broke my absolute speed record... I didn't dare to go beyond 1000m/s though.
After the memorable landing, 2.2 hit and I figured I'll head towards the core... unfortunately, I learned that indeed no FDL has made it to Beagle Point and/or beyond 65kly, so I had no choice, but set out to make it there. Again.
Landing post 2.2 became a lot more interesting to me, especially with upgraded surface textures.
While travelling accross the core, I took a deep dive below the galactic plane to find giant stars. Unfortunatey I didn't find anything larger than 50 solar radii, but some of them were these spectacular blue-white mosnters.
I saw lots squashed gas giants and lava worlds, but nothing like this little moon. I wonder whether there are even ELWs or AWs like this?
Couple of 1000lys below the galactic plane...
And doing canyon runs in search for volcanic sites.
And the first volcanic site I've found, IIRC iron magma.
The meeting with CMDR Jermus, who was on his way back from Beagle Point. The first Sidewinder to get there without help!
The first water geyser site I've found. Driving into the plumes and being catapulted 1 km high was an entertaining, but terrifying experience as I had only one SRV on board.
Gotta love thse proto-volcanoes on HMCs!
Before crossing the Roncevaux...
...and after. In between I had to do some manual plotting, but at least I've found an untagged organge giant!
At laaaast!
At the most distant volcanic site found in co-op with CMDR Felix Macedonica - after his historic rescue! At ehis moment, my recalled ship tried to land on his.
And the volcanic sites kept coming.
Twin AWs.
That little speck is a hot Jupiter around the smaller star.
Around this time, I decided to buckyball towards Hawking's Gap and help in searching the bases. At the end I managed to narrow down the location of the beta base - it wasn't me who found it at the end, but it was a community effort anyway.
The last scenic stopover before the final dash towards the Bubble.
And finally, an uneventful arrival at Farseer's base around the end of January.
