Fiction The Definitive List of Elite Fiction

For a variety of reasons, the threads stickied on this forum are out of date. So, here's a complete list of the fiction, with some comment on areas that may or may not be canon. (Updated 15.05.18)

The Dark Wheel - Robert Holdstock (32nd century).

Original short story included with Elite.

Jason and Alex Ryder were on a simple trading run when suddenly they're attacked by a mysterious commander in a Cobra Mark III. After experiencing tragedy, Alex teams up with Elyssia to track down the assailant, trading his way to an 'iron ' ship so he can face the Cobra pilot once more.

Features the origin of the Raxxla myth, the Dark Wheel, Thargoids, Mymurths, all sorts of the original legends!

Quite a lot of inaccuracies in this related to the modern game of Elite Dangerous. Features the previous fictional galaxy.

Imprint - Andy Redman (32nd century)

Original short story included with Elite Plus.

"It was a time of wonder. The Divergence of the 27th Century recaptured discovery as an ideal. The realms of adventure into the unknown were represented to a race that had grown intensive in stagnation. In a short span of generations, the Human Race was exciting once more and they came forward, revitalised; ready to make an imprint upon the Universe."

Features Thargoids, Lave, The Pilot Academy and Galcop.

Quite a lot of inaccuracies here as this is prior to the Galaxy retcon.

Elite: Lave Revolution - Allen Stroud (AD 3265).

AD 3174 - One man's world.

AD 3265 - Not any more.

Lave.

A single planet, orbiting a dying star. For centuries, spacefarers have visited, docked at the space station and left, with no thought for the people on the planet below.

Bad luck at cards means bad luck all round for Pietro Devander, who journeys half way across human controlled space to this ancient planet, whose name is barely remembered.

What he finds is resistance. What it becomes, is revolution.

Definitive story of Lave, the planet commanders began their adventures on in the original Elite. Now available as an audio drama from the Radio Theatre Workshop right here.

Out of the Darkness - T James (33rd century).

Competent, driven, broken: Moira Dolan is a talented investigator who buries herself in work to hide from her past. She succeeded, until her brother, Keagan, wrecked her career. Now she works for the Proteus Collective.
By night, she's tormented by the same dream. By day, she's assigned dead-end cases by Ferris - a boss who seems intent on making her fail. It appears personal, until Keagan goes missing and Ferris' actions are cast in a whole new light...
Moira thinks her latest assignment will have her chasing ghosts between the stars, but instead she uncovers a deadly conspiracy threatening the precarious balance between the galaxy's major powers, one that could cost billions of lives.

If you're not predator, you're prey.

This story is the official fiction that features the Thargoids.

Elite Reclamation - Drew Wagar(34th century).

Lady Kahina Loren, born into the Prism system’s powerful ruling family, is desperate to throw off the shackles of her privileged lifestyle and discover herself, but ambition crumbles when she faces death at the hands of the one person she thought she could trust. With the advanced technology of the 3rd millennium, death is not always as final as it seems, but when that technology malfunctions, is death the better option.

Some Thargoid hints, Alliance, Imperial, all sorts.

Elite: Wanted - Gavin Deas (34th century, but could be earlier).

When a routine bit of piracy goes wrong, the crew of the Song of Stone realise that there's a bounty hunter on their tail. One who might, finally, be able to outclass them. The Dragon Queen is feared across space, and for good reason. But even the bounty hunter doesn't realise what she's been hired to do. Or what is in the container she's been sent to retrieve.

And she's not the only hunter in the game...

A science fiction story inspired by the Michael Mann film Heat.

Elite Nemorensis - Simon Spurrier (34th century, but could be earlier).

Two lovers steal a spaceship and go on the run, attacking at random and revelling in the fame and glory their violence brings them. Celebrated by the jaded youth of the Federation and urged on to ever more flashy acts of destruction, they know it won't be long before they are caught and killed.

But someone is following the couple. Someone who knows why they are so obsessed with each other. Who knows where they are heading. Who knows why.

Someone who knows more about them than they do themselves. And has another plan for their deaths...

Is Supermassive still happening?

I thought that was one of the three or four dead projects?

I spoke with Andre about a week ago. Yes, I think he's still keen to produce it, but doesn't want to be tied to KS backers, which I can understand. That's why I some refunds have been issued recently. He's been in touch with Frontier too, to remind them he is still around.

It occurred to me that the original manuals contain a lot of official fiction, albeit not stories. Same for the in-game content that doesn't appear in any other media. From memory:
  • Original Elite manual (almost all versions of the original Elite)
  • NES Elite manual (slight differences from the original)
  • Archimedes Elite manual (significantly different from above)
  • FE2 manual
  • FFE manual
For the in-game stuff, there are few people who have the patience to go through and record everything (CMDR Nothoria Infama is one of these special breed of people) but I imagine that they will be different based on who wrote them (what follows is my interpretation, I can't confirm it), with some embelishments as from the earliest to the latest version produced (compare original BBC version to NES version):
Written by Bell and Braben, 6502-based 8-bit computers (spoilered because WOT that is off-topic):
  • All BBC versions
  • Acorn Electron
  • C64
  • Apple II
  • NES
Written by Torus, Z80 based 8-bit computers:
  • 48k Spectrum
  • 128k Spectrum
  • Amstrad CPC
Written by Merlin Software
  • Tatung Einstein
Written by Rob Nicholson with Mr Micro:
  • MSX versions
  • Atari ST
  • Amiga
Written by Andy Onions with Real Time Games:
  • PC Elite
Written by Chris Sawyer with Microprose:
  • PC Elite Plus
Written by Warren Burch & Clive Gringras with Hybrid:
  • Acorn Archimedes, more commonly known as "ArcElite"
Credits to the many Elite fan sites that are still maintained, too many to list, and a resource that will hopefully not be lost. And Ian Bell's website, fan/co-author of the original game!

Goodness me this is an old thread.

When they killed the PowerPlay sub forum I lost my sticky: “History of the Alliance from in-game sources”. I archived it, but I need to find a home for it in lore somewhere.
