Back in the old Elite games, you could find miners who'd dug into an asteroid so far that they've been able to place a dock within, and would happily sell you some things. In Elite: Dangerous, not only would I love to see a reiteration on this, but also player-owned "rock docks".
The Reiteration:
- These guys would have randomly generated, unnamed, and unmarked docks throughout human space. These can be found within asteroid belts, as well as in Resource Extraction Sites, although rarely.
- Since ED has a completely different docking system to Elite 1984, I imagine docking clearance will still be a must.
- One small or medium docking pad.
- Available services are: commodities market, black market (perhaps), refuel. The following are unavailable: rearm, UC, contacts, repair, outfitting, shipyard, etc.
- Commodities market has a tiny demand for food and explosives, and a tiny supply of minerals.
- The Rock Hermit is unaligned to any faction, and will be a tier 2 NPC - your rep can influence his actions.
Player Owned Rock Docks:
- Expensive (~20 Million for rock dock with small pad, ~50 Million with medium, ~100 Million with large)
- Placed in a random spot within the chosen asteroid ring, and the navigation point is only visible to you. It is not static, but rather generated when you enter the instance. Others can follow you to it, however.
- Can store modules, materials (perhaps), a certain amount of cargo (based on size), a certain amount of fuel (based on size).
- Perhaps, perhaps, when player ship delivery is in place, we can deliver a ship to store here?
- When contacts are expanded upon, and NPC crew is added, we might make this a nice home for our NPC friends. Essentially, this is the answer to player housing, with enough room for all players in the gigantic galaxy of ED.
I've been looking forward to these for a long time. I hope you make it just as awesome as I imagine (and I know that you definitely can go beyond that)
