I hear quite alot around the Elite community about imperial slaves. Many hear the word slave and come to the rational conclusion, that Imperial Slaves are similar to Illegal Slaves, but are simply only legal in the Empire. This, is quite the contrary.
In Imperial Society, slave labour is extremely important to the lifestyle, economy, and general society of the Empire as a whole. The Empire's slave system is closley related to the Roman Empire's form of slavery, but with key differences. Then what, or who are Imperial Slaves really?
An Imperial Slave is usually a citizen of the Empire that has fallen into debt, one they could never hope to repay. One way they are allowed, by law, to pay off their debt is to become an Imperial Slave, by their choice alone. These citizens then become an Imperial Slave for a set amount of time, or until their debt is repayed by their labour.
It is also fair to mention that courts can force a criminal to become an Imperial Slave as punishment for their crimes.
Considering this, over time strict regulations have been placed over the handling and labour of Imperial Slaves. (aka no whiping, beating, etc) Laws are in place to protect the rights of an Imperial Slave, though less then an average citizen. Any abuse can be reported, and the abuser can face serious criminal charges in an Imperial Court.
Compared to the average slaves illegaly traded throughout the galaxy (ESPECIALLY the Federation, who has a massive illgal slave epidemic) it isn't even close to the litteral hell illegal slaves will face for their entire lives.
Now i'm not going to be solely biased and say that Imperial Slaves face a Peachy day living in luxury. The labour they must do is harsh, many worse then others. Some slaves work long, tireless hours in the mines and industry on Cemiess. While others may become servants to the wealthy. Others could then be placed into different jobs that need labour as well.
In all Imperial Slavery benifits society by giving people a chance to save their homes and families from crippling debt, and is more eithical then illegal slave trade that will happen regardless of laws and police enforcement.
