The "Do not make this game into Eve" whining gets on my nerves

I have heard the "Do not make this game into Eve" often enough that it really gets on my nerves and makes me angry, because it is such a dumb statement.

So to all people that say that, a few points to remember:

1. This is Elite: Dangerous, noone cares about Eve.
2. If a feature is good and improves the game, hopefully noone cares about whether it is in another game.
3. Same goes for all other possible features of all other MMOs.
4. If you are intelligent, you learn from the successes and mistakes of other people.

Is "The Artist" a worse film, because it heavily leans on the plot from "Singing in the Rain"?
Is Windows 7 anything like a Mac, just because it uses a mouse?
Is Chrome the same as Firefox and Internet Explorer, because it uses tabs?

Really, guys, it's no issue at all whether there are features that are similar to other games, be they called Eve, or World of Warcraft, or World of Tanks, or Trucking Simulator 2014.
The only things that matters are:
Will the feature make Elite: Dangerous as good as possible?
Will the feature make Elite: Dangerous better and more enjoyable?
Will the feature allow us to play more Elite: Dangerous and have more fun in it?

Of course there are things like the core of the brand... but really... that's not your business. This is Frontier's business and David Braben's business.

P.S.
Yes, I know, this is a whine post about whiners.

TL;DR
It only matters how Elite: Dangerous can become an even better game. Learning from others - whoever they are - does not take away anything from it.

EvE got a lot of things right. There's no shame in 'borrowing' some of their ideas. My perfect game would be EvE depth with Some aspects of the X series empire building and twitch mechanics.

it's not like eve, in eve you get ganked, loose everything(unless insured) maybe loose implants and clone. I hated Eve, good idea, but need pve more, and police squads (npc - concord) that kick ass when any ganking takes place 0.2 - 1.0 keep gankers to 00.

At least I can have fun doing what and where I want in ED, no worries about some a.s.s hassling me. If I want to PvP I switch modes, but if i get wiped, I keep everything.

+1, I agree! It's not just Eve they seem to hate on but every other space game out there. There are some games out there with features that really get it right.

To be fair, most people who say that (like myself) are more worried about the replication of EVE's community and HTFU atmosphere rather than any gameplay elements.

This is the internet. Throw 10.000 people in a forum and it's atmosphere is the same. Anywhere. In any game I ever played. Maybe with some regional or target group specifics.

Atleast, Eve was "Dangerous" and had a real risk vs reward system in place. Elite needs to remove the "Dangerous" tag from its name. In fact, I think they need to change the name of this game altogether. They should call it Space Trucking Simulator 1.0, or Warp to Solo Mode 1.0.

Up until probably November 2012, this forum was populated purely with fanbois....it was harmonious and pleasant.

2012 - dec 2014 the fun times peaked.

16 dec 2014 onwards became what you describe.

I don't care what the forum is like. I care what the game's community & mechanics are like. David Braben has been quoted as saying:

It is important that players enjoy the experience. We are writing this game for ourselves, and the fun of the game is the most important thing. Player-player encounters should be interesting, and part of this is the ability to hide - whether from other players or AIs.
Most of the ships you encounter will be AIs - and in many cases you will kill them - which is why we want the majority to be AIs. Generally speaking we expect players, even beginners, to be more of a challenge than an AI ship, and something that players will tend not to attack, but more cooperate with, and we are designing the bounty system (and others) to discourage PvP and encourage player cooperation.

So, yeah, we won't be getting EVE. That doesn't mean some things from EVE aren't good ideas. Elite isn't the same game at all, however.

I think the point is ... with a little community resposibility, it really doesn't have to be that way.

Always provided it fits with the intention of what the game is supposed to be. Just because a feature is good in another game doesn't mean it fits this game.
There's a lot of people who enjoy Eve, but this game is not Eve. If for those people an additional Eve-like feature hightens enjoyment then that's not an argument at all.
It's only an argument if it hightens enjoyment of people who like Elite (and not Eve also).

As for those who want to stuff Eve (or X) feautures into Elite - why not go play Eve/X? Making every game the same is not sensible. because in the end we'll have a bunch of lookalike games where everyone hates some features
I don't play Eve because I don't like that type of game. I loved the first X game titles but I don't want to see the X features (station building, etc.) in Elite, either. Elite has its own niche and that is engaging enough without trying to be an 'also-ran' and trying to add features that go against the "one man - one ship" idea.

Agreed, it's why I haven't given up on the forums and retreated to the private backers forum. I think moderating and trying to keep polite goes a long way. And calling out 'the metagame' when you see it.

They should call it Space Trucking Simulator 1.0, or Warp to Solo Mode 1.0.

Only if you play it that way. The game also offers multiplayer mode if you haven't noticed and trucking (trading) is only one route open to play the game. Maybe the most profitable, but i don't care about profit, i care about fun. Trading is boring.

As everyone has different (subtly so or not) interpretations of "good", "better", "enjoyable" and "fun", I expect there to be significant differences in opinion as to what features of other games would be "good things" to implement in Elite: Dangerous.

I'm for introducing anything that add's to the Game, remembering that it's a game about You as an owner/operator of a spacecraft.

So I (personally) am against ownership of corporations, e.g. Spreadsheet games.

In eve online the "solo mode players" are property of "open mode players", the first is paying to the second for right to life.
Brilliant.

What we have now is a simulation. And a great one too, really, flying these ships is fantastic. But I don't see any point to doing anything, there is no game. Doing the same missions with a new name, visiting the same stations with a new name, it all feels the same.

Would be fun if we could perhaps join one of three "groups" (Federation...) and really become part of it. Help it conquer planets. Increase it's wealth with trade. Defend it from the others. Like REAL multiplayer features, there are none now.

This game needs competition amongst players - that's what drives (most) people everyday. Maybe forced competition, split up solo and the real world, no swapping anymore. Lose more when you die, so it becomes interesting and DANGEROUS to live :)
