The dogs bark, but the caravan goes on

A friend of mine has very rare genetic illness, sometimes his head is disconnected from the rest of his body and he makes uncontrolled movements, breaking stuff, turning in wrong direction etc.

Does the ED have the same illness? Look at the Galnet articles. Somebody’s grandma has been lost, the dog of the second child of the governor of HIP 3456342 is ill; some tourists have reached the middle of nowhere? Is the head of ED represented by FD disconnected from what really happens in the game world?

LOL, literally no single clue in the galactic wide broadcasting system about the tremendous effort of allied anti xeno forces cleared more than 10 systems in incursion per week. AXI, HIVE, Vampyr Ponys, Esquadron Castigador, Torgue Company and many independent commanders have wiped 20+ incursions in last two weeks. The inhabited bubble set in fire by thargoids has been almost cleared, I’ve lost the count of how many hydras were killed in AXCZs despite the bugs, desyncs and instancing issues but nobody in FD is aware of this. Or simply don’t care.

Nobody in the bubble is aware of Thargoids, judging by the lack of reaction from everyone.
It does seems like Thargoids ark is put on a hold.

It's quite possible billions of people don't even know Thargoids exist. PF pilots GalNet is likely more informative version on the subject than what people living down on those earth-like worlds get. "Thargoid activity report" is all you need really.

Breathing unsanitized, gravity bound oxygen all day, uh, it's probably better nobody tells them. People on orbital starports are slightly sharper, some of them have figured out there's something weird out there, and founded these "Far God" cults.

I made Prince the other day, and the game sent me a two line congratulatory message.

That's it.

Galnet is the same, disconnected. As far as Thargoids, they're different looking NPCs, some are weak, others strong. They're optional game play.

You have to imagine a lot to make up for what the game doesn't provide.

And I want my cookie for Prince rank.

I think the lack of awareness of Thargoids is realistic. A government will always play down distant problems and try to keep people focused on local issues. Until they need to mobilise for total war: then the propaganda will start. Cue stories about Thargoids boiling humans to make soap when we reach that point.

In hyperdiction encounters I've had I can't escape the feeling that the Thargoids are looking for something, and we're not their main concern at all. Things could really kick off if either they find what they're seeking, or we find out what it is.

I suspect there are those among the developers who have gnashed their teeth down to gum-level stumps in frustration at the restrictions that keeping combat optional has placed on the development of the Thargoid storyline: apart from the odd usually non-violent hyperdiction, Thargoids have to be kept corralled in AXCZs and NHSSs where they can be safely ignored.

On the other hand I like to set myself a task at the start of each play session and my teeth would be similarly afflicted if I were interrupted and forced to do what the developers want me to do (such as fight Thargoids) instead of what I want to do (which is most often something other than fight Thargoids).

There's just no easy answer to this. If you want to "play it your way" - and I certainly do - then the price paid for the right to do so is that the developers are unavoidably hamstrung in their ability to impose the Thargoid storyline on the game.

So all the billions of people that we are saving from burning stations suffer from a mass delusion? The station started burning and boiling ships for no good reason?

The players are not the only ones encountering Thargoids if we choose to. The Goids are attacking stations and are present in systems even without us. So since the game is sold as a "living galaxy", the population would have seen something or had close encounters too with the bugs.

Who cares if FDEV notices you and gives you a pat on the bottom? Play for the enjoyment of you and yours.

Same with the News in the real world though isn't it.
War and tragedy one moment, then the next day forgotten for a celebrity marriage..
Maybe if Admiral Tanner has an affair we might see Aegis back in the News

I strongly disagree. 2000 years from now, if we could do the things we do in this game, the news would certainly spread that stations all over the bubble were under attack. There's no reason to try to shoe-horn the lack of alien influence in the bubble into realism of any kind. The millions of people rescued would tell stories, and ship captains would as well. Large groups of military ships would create a mass exodus from healthy systems to head off the invasion. It simply hasn't happened.

I'm ok with it. I never shot at a thargoid, don't care to. Might as well have space zombies if I'm going to pretend an aggressive flower looking object is somehow good game content. Some like it though.

Over 62,000 ports in ED, less than 100 have been damaged, sounds more like you guys are trying to deal with a termite issue. Well done though..

Btw, here's the last thing Galnet had to say regarding the termite problem. Very true though, termites don't care about military strategies.

“What’s surprising is that the Thargoids aren’t targeting our most important social or military centres, such as the superpowers’ home systems. There’s no doubt that they’re trying to weaken us, but evidently they’re guided by different principles than those that typically govern human martial strategy

Everything in Elite is a half-baked placeholder made by people that never think things through and are completely satisfied with mediocrity. Why do you expect Galnet is supposed to be an exception? It's like seeking any shred of originality in the old CG system - it was a meaningless weekly copy-paste activity just for the sake of checking the box that it was done, nothing more, nothing less. So is this. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

I don’t even bother reading or listening to the GalNet, because, if I am honest, I can’t really be bothered to. Am I missing out on much? Is the GalNet just made up of irrelevant and random news, or does it actually hold information that can be useful to the player, such as places of interest etc?
