The DW2 event has illustrated one thing...

Evening,

DW2 has shone a spotlight one thing - that CMDRS like to be sociable and interact with each other.

The popularity of this event drew more players in during it's final days because people want to connect. All 12,000+ of them!

But it's a shame that this game makes connecting and player interaction in game so difficult.

- It struck me how "basecamps" don't form nice circles on planetary surfaces because it's a pretty shape. Oh no, it's because there is no other way to see or communicate with other ships around unless you are directly looking at them. I sometimes flip over to that awful camera mode to get a better sense of who is around - but I'm immediately disconnected from any chat communication. As a result I never really use it or get a sense of who is about. So instead I think players have to sit there with a window on the circle of other ships so they can see who they are talking to.

- It's also quite difficult to target other ships in your peripheral vision, unless they are right in front of you. So checking ship names or ID's is always a bit challenging in those scenarios.

- With the lack of any other way of interacting, there are loads of players who have to resort to "blue nosing" their friends as like a hello boop, or acknowledgement. And some take it further buy climbing on other ships in their SRVs. But from an external point of view, I know FDev likes to take their science seriously - it's kind of weird .... and just reinforces the lack of gameplay or infrastructure that allow players to genuinely interact in game.

- Speaking of SRVs it was also odd seeing everyone in the same damn vehicle. I feel like ground based vehicles should be more advanced, or have more variation now other than paint jobs?

- Don't get me started about multi crew. There are so many things that a crew mate should be able to do, which they just can't! And they don't even see any of your cockpit decorations if you have them. If FDev thinks that there is stuff in exploration for multi crew to - they are sorely, sorely wrong. Even then switching camera modes to view your crewmates means you lose your chat window and can't communicate with them. This constant chat window thing is such a basic game tool that every other MMO has haha - why is it so difficult FDev?

As a result I think a multi crew reform, new SRV types and spacelegs can't come soon enough.

Players want to interact, connect, work together and tell their stories together - LET US!

What it teachs is that no matter how far away explorers are, you can still not avoid them going on about exploration.

I am not sure people (that are probably mostly men) would really want to keep touching each other 1000+ years into the future. That's just weird. 3g came a long while back and apparently people just don't want to see each other while talking on the phone, one of those forgotten technologies like MMS. Would be quite awkward if I had to post selfies while typing this (if you need a picture in your head, I am wearing underwear right now; am not a woman and not even that young anymore).
Maybe what Elite needs is another dust514 so people can shoot each other for interaction, without burdening the main game with unnecessary features they can't scrap easily...

To be honest, the ingame chat really isn't a feature I would promote when telling people about the game... Apart from being buggy at the moment, it's also very inconvenient. I would love to see things like pop out holo windows for our interface. That would be absolutely awesome. Plus options to customize those windows... Back then there were a few games doing that kind of thing. Morrowind for example. Drag and drop windows, making windows stay active all the time non matter what we activate (like, having the chat window active while in camera suite, or not active while in FSS mode... Things like that would be really awesome, and immersive, and fitting.

Using the chat as it is now is pretty annoying to be honest and I rather use the Discord on my second screen.
