The Eagle. Getting it up to speed as a useful ship...

Yes I have a 'Freagle'. I find it agile and reasonably proficient at travel for exploration purposes and most capable of outrunning those annoying interdictions. Apart from two nights ago when I stupidly took on a Python and got totally killed to death.

But I have a problem with energy useage. I don't quite understand energy usage on individual modules and I can see they seem to run from numbers 1 to 4 and are adjustable but I have no idea what that strange bar graph is on the bottom part below the different units.

I upgraded weapons so I now have two upgraded 1G burst lasers (multiple pulse on gimbal mount) and one 1F multi-cannon (on fixed mount).

I also upgraded some bulkheads and the energy distribution. Sorry I can't be more specific but I'm upgrading to Gamma 1.05 at the mo so can't get in to give exact specs.

So now my ship is at 109% of power. When using the weapons I lose my scanner making it difficult to track and kill pirates. I have tried setting different weapons set ups with 1 cannon being main, second profile being cannon, third being a mix and 4th being D-scan.

But I'm still getting stuff switching off and weapons going offline.

What I am looking for is an Eagle to explore with whilst being able to see off most interdictors. I have dumped cargo space and shut down the cargo door totally so no energy usage there but I am having problems still.

Of course I have upgraded way beyond the power output of my ship in it's current state and I would love to get a bigger energy unit but I feel that at this time I am not understanding the balance of my ship's power systems and as such I think I could do more before seeking out and spending more?

Your thoughts and comments would be welcomed...

The eagle is well known to be underpowered in it's purchased state.
To get a decent weapons setup you really need to upgrade your power module as a priority.
To gain jump distance try fitting D modules as they give the best weight to stat increase overall
.
In the modules tab you can set prioties for power usage...when weapons are deployed they will draw more power!

combat equipment such as weapons, shields and scanners should be set to 1
Jump drives etc cannot be used with weapons deployed so set them to 2 or 3
.
This is basic so play around with your loadout a bit while in gamma...
.
EDIT: The Eagle is my favourite ship for having fun in

Ok SO... The power priority is ranged from 1-4. 1 being the highest and 4 being the lowest. When your ship can't keep up with the power demands it (your ship) will automatically start turning off modules. It will start turning off all modules with priority 4 first then if that still wasn't enough 3.... and so on. So When you set weapons to 1 and shields to 2, and your power output can't keep up with the demand. it will turn off your shield so your guns still work.

What I do is try to keep weapons and 'non essential' modules on separate priorities. So I keep Cargo bay on 3 for example. If the power draw is too much the cargo bay simply won't work, but my guns and life support will.

Of course if your still having issues with power you can also just buy upgraded power plants or power distributors.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I believe Kaku Orbital in Chemku sells a power reactor. At least it does for the Cobra, not sure if it'll fit inside an Eagle. But it was over a million credits. I'm currently saving up for it

You can get by with over 100% power usage if you lower priorities for FSD and cargo hatch and possibly life support if you're fine with finishing the fights without it :)

I think using d-scanner in FSD doesn't have the same effect as deploying hardpoints in normal space(as in, weapons won't draw power) but it might cause some issues since disabling fsd will make you emergency stop.

I picked one up for $56000 that was enough to power the stock lasers plus add a multicannon, heat sink launcher, and FSD interdictor without having anything power down.

Not sure what system you're hanging around but I have found two places I can get power plants and distributors for my Eagle. One is Kanwar Enterprise in the Cerno system. The other is Marshburn Terminal in the system designated as BD+24 1451. I have already upgraded both of those parts, as well as my FSD. Now I'm working toward upgrading the weapons and sensors.

I'm running two C Beam Lasers, kws and fuel scoop.

Powering down the scoop, cargo hatch and fsd allows me to use the Beamers. Very workable in reality as you can close hardpoints and repower the fsd quickly if you need to get away.

A better power gen would allow for a 3rd weapon, but you'd also want a better distributor to take advantage of them (unless the 3rd weapon is a missile rack).

If you using a Freagle, go to TZ Arietis system as soon as you can.

It has all upgrade you need.

The things you really need to upgrade first:

1. Reactor
2. Power distributor module
3. FSD
4. Thrusters
5. Shields

IF you have all those up to scratch you should have no problems with power. I'm running 3 fixed Beam Lasers on mine (probably the most energy consuming setup saves Railguns) and I have no problems at all.

Do not waste money on upgrading Life Support and Scanner beyond D class as they wastes power and are heavy.

I upgraded weapons so I now have two upgraded 1G burst lasers (multiple pulse on gimbal mount) and one 1F multi-cannon (on fixed mount).

I know it is personal perference but personally I would not use gimballed burst on Eagle - you don't need it as Eagle is so maneuverable and the fact that lasers are hitscan weapon, you can aim and direct hit very easily. Gimbal also wastes more power.

Gimball your overhead mounted multi-cannon instead. That will help you a lot more because multi-cannon are low energy consumption anyways and gimbal will help you save ammo more and land more hits. Overhead mounts are fantastic for gimbal. Undercarriage mounts on the other hand are terrible for gimbal.

Commanders thank you. Excellent information.

I found a station selling the all important reactor upgrade and as soon as I fitted it my power usage went from 109% to 86% so I am tres pleased! I now feel confident in handling interdictions in a more aggressive fashion. Of course last night I spent an hour mapping out 3 systems, all anarchic and I got jumped once! I did take him on with new found confidence and kicked his ass down to 11% whereupon her FSD'd the heck out of there before I could finish him.

it seems that I have really, apart from the powerplant upgrade, done things in reverse order. I have upgraded weapons first and some armour. On the lookout for FSD, thrusters and shields now. I may back track to the place I found the upgrades. Forgot its name but I wrote it down. Its only about 20ly away...

I agree with the above, you really urgently need to upgrade the power supply, once you have that get fixed beam lasers. You really don't need gimballed weapons because the ship itself is so maneuverable, it's really easy to stick to an enemies tail provided you're comfortable juggling power balance. Next I would upgrade the thrusters, really make the Eagle a very, very good little dogfighter. For me, even the stock Freagle is an absolute joy to fly.... And an effective fighter to boot...

The Eagle fights better with one gimballed Burst laser and two multi-cannons. Two burst lasers are normally required to take down shields efficiently but with the two multi-cannons going at the same time they will make up for one burst lazer more or less against shields your single burst laser will do the rest.. Then when their shields are down the two multi-cannons will rip up the hull complimented by the burst laser. I find this works well for me ;)

PS. It is important to be firing all three guns together of course. Upgrade the power plant first. It will allow you to have 3 guns.

Hi Orfeboy. I have three weapons on now, two burst and a multi cannon. Runns well but I may try the two Multi. Only thing is the cost of ammo. The less I spend the more I make, although exploration isn't all about the money for me...

Well you can do that of course if you switch your FSD and cargo hatch to priority 2, but if you upgrade nothing else, change the guns like I say and the power distributer. You will have the best success with this set up if you upgrade the power distributer (you must alter the power priorities as above) and put all power to weapons when attacking. The problem with burst lasers is that they heat up fast. A good power distributer allows you to fire them for a long time. The set up I mentioned above allows you to fire them indefinately! This configuration works well and makes the Eagle a great ship for bounty hunting. I am currently hunting Asps which earn you around 15,000 each. Other eagles, sidewinders and vipers are easy with your eagle set up like this.

Later you can sell your class 3 shield generator and buy a class 2B or 2A. Put this in the slot where your cargo hold currently is. This will free up your size 3 internal compartment. You can then buy a size 3 cargo bay giving you 8 ton cargo space or even sell your discovery scanner and buy a 2 ton cargo bay bringing your total space up to 10 tons. This makes for a very fight capable ship and capable of making some good money from trading too if you deal in gold and so on (for a small ship of course).

Making money in this game is all relative to the ship you are in. Upgrades for the eagle and sidewinder do not cost anything like that of the cobra for example. Therefore a 10 ton cargo hold will buy you those upgrades probably in the same time the bigger hold in the cobra would buy thhe upgrades for the cobra.

The set up mentioned above would also work very well for pirating too if you dropped to 8 tons cargo space and add an interdictor instead of the two ton cargo bay making the eagle an excellent ship choice for pirates.

For me the game is not all about making money but just enjoying the ship you are in. That is why I still think the game needs a lot more development to keep it interesting. Not everyone wants to get the biggest ship! :)

Others have explained how the power system works so I won't repeat that. I would suggest having your priorities set like this: 1 is the highest priority

1: Thrusters, Weapons, Shields, Life Support
2: FSD (you cannot engage your FSD with your hardpoints deployed so if you need to use it you have to retract your weapons anyway)
3: Everything else.

You can safety switch your cargo scoop off completely, you can still fuel scoop and carry cargo. (Did this myself on the Freagle)

Now, if you still do not have enough power available then you need to look at the weapons you have fitted. Energy weapons as you would expect draw a whole load of power, as so heavy hitting weapons like cannons and rail guns. Gimballed and Turret weapons also draw more power than their fixed versions. At the start I kept the two loaded fixed pulse lasers in the lower mounts and put a gimballed multi-cannon in the top mount.

As others have said though, upgrading your power plant is one of your first priorities in the Freagle. You can also upgrade your 2T cargo rack to a 4T without losing anything (the 2T you start with is a class 1 module in a class 2 slot, the 4T module is a class 2 item) which will allow you to take more missions.

I've just made of video about outfitting Eagle to be agile and fast fighter craft.
