Also I believe ED takes place several hundred years after the 3rd WW so many countries had time to rebuild and reclaim what was lost. We humans are an industries bunch afterall :D

The third world war was in the 21st century, and E: D is in the 34th Century. There is a lot of time to recover.

The earth looked great in FE2 and looked like brown poodoo in FFE because of (insert coding geekery) things and they just left it as mush.

The Gazeteer which came with FE2 was pretty clear about the environmental damage. It was cleaned up and Earth is now a super expensive place to live and only the weathly and the politicians live there. Actually visiting Earth is a bit like a trip of a lifetime for most humans.

From the Gazeteer:
Earth

Steeped in history, the Earth has suffered many adversities before becoming the resort that it is today. Humanity began here and documented accounts tell of three planet-bound wars, the last one in 2040 almost bringing extinction due to the loss of life and environmental damage. For these reasons the landscape has changed beyond all recognition since then, mainly due to devastation and depopulation of nearly all the cities and towns. The final insult was a viral pandemic, for which no cure was found and many perished who were not resistant to it.

As the world was rebuilt corporations became more influential and the balance of power went in their favour. After the war, fierce competition between them made it possible for space to be conquered whereas previously, that was seen as unimportant and exploration budgets were cut.

As extra-terrestrial settlements were established industry was moved off the Earth along with many people. An intensive environmental rescue program saved the planet and it again became the beautiful place it once was. It became both a very up-market tourist destination and the Federation capital with only the extremely rich being able to live there. Many native extra-terrestrials aspire to visit their roots and save up for many years just to be able to say they have been to their ancestors' birthplace.

Now you could argue that 100 years have passed since the Gazeteer was 'set' i.e the year 3200. There was no mention in any FFE canon that some major disaster had occured on Earth between Fe2 and FFE.

It'll look like Earth, Jim, but not as we know it.

So that's saying once planet landing is up is going to cost a lot of credit to come bakc to earth? I think Ill stay in space in game. Ill visit earth when Im not playing

After this discussion started I started to look into Elite Lore and found that too. So Earth should look pretty much the same as it now does. Even coastal lines so I don't get why David Braben mentioned the fact that the coastal lines would have changed due to waters rising. Forgot a bit of is own lore perhaps? ;) Ah well, I can forgive him that easily hehehe.

Still the water cities could still be there or on planets that are covered by water perhaps.

I love the first desing InMemoriamSirocco posted by the way. Look really great and futuristic.

Except that in the game it was covered in permanent cloud of, I inferred at the time, pollution - so even if it was not written down, it was pretty evident in the game.

Two points...

1. Please NO Kevin Costner "Water World" style cobblers!!! Gills and webbed feet..... Sounds too Yorkshire to me... Ew!

2. Will there be diving in a future release? My house is most likely under water and I need to check to see if my new X55 joystick has arrived..

Cant wait to see the new earth no matter what our descendants/we have done to it... :D
Brian :)

Oh I do so second that first motion! I think i would go in guns blazing just out of pure frustration! :D

Underwater cities would be cool as well! Docking in some sort of airlock and then having the water drain away seeing it wash down on your canopy! Then piloting the ship into the dockingbay while you could see the body of water above you! Now that would be awesome!

Probably never going to happen but we can still dream can't we? ;)

Not to bust your bubble (pun intended), but the intergalactic news gazettes in FFE suggested that genetic manipulation of the human genome was a common thing in the Empire of Man, mutating the human body to make it more suitable for living under various conditions.

They had "dwarfs" from high gravity planets, and even people with extra limbs and exoskeletons for living and working under zero G conditions, if I recall correctly. They also had banned uncontrolled sexual reproduction (which had led to a degradation of women as second class citizens for having no other use than being "decorative") and instead populated their planets via genetic engineering and mass production of humans.

So the notion of water planet people with skin between their toes and fingers is not at all far fetched, I am afraid. :D

The official explanation I got years ago was that there was a bug that simulated visual conditions like venus it wasn't intended to look crappy like that. I think there were different versions (releases) where Earth looked normal if I recall correctly.

Interesting. Would be great to find a source, but probably a futile hope after all these years...

There is a reference to 'body shaving' and the propensity of surgical change in Lave Revolution. ;)

Indeed sorry I couldn't be more specific I had asked this question back when I had gotten back into FFE so early-mid 2000s. I think the hex value in the game code of Earth's appearance was off by a value or so which tripped its appearance. I remember seeing an "original" version where it was corrected and of course many 3rd party versions that came afterwards fixed it as well.

From what I could tell it was definitely not a story element.

Unless during the 2040s when World War III happened, the "dreadful environmental damage" also caused disruption to the tectonic plates...

Plates are between 10 and 100km thick. I doubt anything man-made can break or alter that, given they are the size, of, well, continents. Given the energy requirements to disrupt that, I guess all life would be extinct long before any result is achieved on the plates.

Still, I hope my house is still there... I'm planning on going to have left a few prezzies from the past, unless I go out for a few beers tonight...

Brian :)
