I just watched the Eichmann show (2015) on netflix, starring Martin Freeman, i know my history, i know my politics and ideals and values, yet this film even made me think about the present day, about Trump and the far right, about the dangers of fascism. In the movie one of the men tasked with filming the trial said to one of the Israelis on the broadcast team "we need to show the world that there are no monsters, but anyone can be capable of monserous things, anyone can be a fascist"to which the Israeli man replied "not me" (he was a holocaust survivor". I also would react by saying not me, as someone who loves to learn of human history i believe we should learn from it, none of us on these forums would describe themselves as fascist, but i think the American who made that comment to the Israeli had a point, i mean, Germany was a civilised country the very day before Hitler took office by democracy, modern 20th century Germans sleepwalked their nation into the hands of a fascist dictator who used propaganda to reduce the Jews to "the others" or "the enemy" or "sub human". Is it happening again ? But this time with the Muslims ? First Trump came for the Muslims.......the press, the disabled people, while Hitler favoured the Aryan, Trump favours the Evangelical. Theresa May is echoing Trumps sentiment (Are we like Italy under Mussolini ?) France will soon have a Conservative president (Vichy ?). And then there is the saddest truth of them all, Netanyahu and his religious coalition is stealing land from another people (breathing room ? promised land ?). I speak as a lefty liberal for sure (and supporter of Israel's right to exist), but a secularist first, i have no love for Islam and would support a burqa ban (it worked in Turkish education for a long time) and i'm no pacifist by any means, but i draw the line here, enough is enough, ofcourse i can't stop the rise of the far right, but i won't be fooled by them, i hope you all agree. I know this is a ,long, deep post about uncomfortable things, but important things. Food for thought, any agreements or arguments appreciated. Edit: Just a note here, i'm not saying that this is definitely happening or Trump, May and co are anything like Hitler and Mussolini, but it's worth taking a step back, looking back at history and looking at current events, i know this is long winded and might not get read too much, but anyone who does read this, i hope you will post a reply, i want to know if people think i'm overthinking this or not.
