So this story is already starting to draw speculation.

During the evening, Karen was manning the Lavecon stand and got into a conversation with a grey haired gentlemen with glasses about what activities are going on at our event. After chatting for a while, he smiled at her leaned forwards, pulled down his spectacles and said 'Do you know who I am?'

Slightly startled and confused, Karen replied 'No, I'm sorry.'

The man smiled again stepped back and walked away.

I returned to the Lavecon stand and heard this part of the story, I went across the hall and found Michael Brookes to ask him if he knew the person and if we'd offended someone. He shrugged and couldn't place the description, but then said, 'Was it Ian Bell?'

Now I've seen Ian Bell's posted pictures and interviews with him. He's not got grey hair (usually a goatee and close cropped or shaven), but some of those pictures are quite old...

I then found Drew and his wife Anita told him the story. Anita then told both of us that she'd been approached by a man matching the description who'd said exactly the same thing. When she'd replied 'No' he then added. 'I was at the first Elite launch. Do you know when that was?' To which she replied '1984'.

He then walked away.

We shared the story at Sunday lunch the day after. Subsequently, Kate Russell mentioned she'd been contacted by someone after the premiere via twitter calling himself 'the other creator' and including a link to Ian Bell's website.

So who was this person at the launch event? Was it the same person who contacted Kate? Was it Ian Bell? Or was it someone else?

Speculation and information greatly appreciated...:D

No idea, but I would hope that he was at least given an invitation, considering his role in starting the whole thing all that time ago.

I notice that David often credits him in interviews when he talks about the original Elite, but I've no idea whether they are in touch in any way.

This is the gaming world's equivalent of Syd Barrett walking into the studio when Pink Floyd were recording 'Shine on you crazy diamond'.

Nobody recognised poor old Syd either, and his mind was all shot to hell with way too much acid.

More speculation needed!

no doubt someone from the future coming back to see history in the making. Apparentely he was going to 1984 next.

I had a similar encounter on the 22nd!

A short interview with Ian Bell here about his work (now at Autodesk) and some reminisces about creating Elite (interview is about a year old)

Confirms the greyhair-ness! :D

From that interview;

With the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, would you have done anything differently? If you had a time machine, what advice would you whisper in the ear of your twenty year-old self?

Don’t trust David to play fair by you.

Couldn't help a wry smile at that :)

Well done +1 added!

Edit: I can't because I've repped you already apparently....

Well it was actually "Fly Fishing, by J R Hartley" as part of a Yellow Pages advert so do I get rep too?

And as for the mysterious guest all I can say is didn't everyone have tickets? Who bought the one the mysterious guest had?
